(Common to CE & ME)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks:
70
PART – A
(Answer all questions - 5 X 2 = 10 marks)

1 (a) State Bayes’ theorem. [K1]

(b) The random variable X has a Poisson distribution. If P(X = 1) = 0.01487,
P(X = 2) = 0.04461, then find P(X = 3). [K2]
(c) List the steps involved in the procedure of testing a hypothesis. [K1]
(d) The mean and the standard deviation of a population are 11,795 and 14,054 respectively.
If n = 50, find 95% confidence interval for the mean. [K2]
(e) State a few important methods for studying correlation. [K1] [2+2+2+2+2]

PART – B
(Answer the following question - 5 X 12 = 60 marks)
2 (a) An urn A contains 5 white and 3 black balls. Another urn B contains 3 white and 5
black balls. Two balls are taken from urn A randomly and are placed in urn B. Now,
one ball is taken from urn B. What is the probability that it is a black ball? [K2] [6M]
(b) If A and B are two independent events such that P(A) = 1−α , P(B) = 1−β , then find
P( A ∪ B). [K3] [6M]
(OR)
3 (a) Describe the properties of the probability distribution function. [K2] [6M]
(b) Let X be a discrete random variable having the following probability distribution:
X -2 -1 0 1 2 3
P(X) 0.1 k 0.2 2k 0.3 3k
Find (i) k, (ii) mean, (iii) variance. [K3] [6M]

4 (a) Derive recurrence relation of binomial distribution. [K3] [6M]

(b) Deduce variance of binomial distribution. [K3] [6M]
(OR)
5 (a) If the probability of a defective fuse from a manufacturing unit is 2%, in a box of 200
fuses, find the probability that (i) exactly 4 fuses are defective (ii) more than 3 fuses
are defective. [K3] [6M]
(b) In a normal distribution, 7% of the items are under 35 and 89% are under 63. What are
the mean and standard deviation of the distribution. [K3] [6M]

6 (a) The mean of certain normal population is equal to the standard error of the mean of the
samples of 64 from that distribution. Find the probability that the mean of the sample
size 36 will be negative? [K3] [6M]
(b) Describe two-tailed and one-tailed tests of hypothesis. [K3] [6M]
(OR)
7 (a) A random sample of size 81 was taken whose variance is 20.25 and mean is 32.
Construct 98% confidence level. [K3] [6M]
(b) The standard deviations of two samples of size 225 and 300 are respectively 5 and 10.
Determine the standard error of the difference between the means. Also find the
confidence interval at 0.05 level of significance. Assume the means of the samples are
80 and 50 respectively. [K3] [6M]

8 (a) A random sample of size 16 has 53 as mean. The sum of the squares of the deviations
taken from mean is 150. Can this sample be regarded as taken from population having
56 as mean? Obtain 95% and 99% confidence limits of the mean of the population.
[K3] [6M]
