Transitional Devices

The word ‘Transitional’ is derived from ‘transition’ means “Change”.


Whenever transitional words are used it means ‘change in idea’
occurs/happens.
Note:
Conjunctions and Transitional Devices both are used as ‘connectors’. The
minor difference is that ‘Conjunctions’ generally connect ‘clauses’ and
‘Transitional Devices’ connect ‘ideas/sentences’.

Their function is to make the text coherent/connected.

Sometimes, conjunctions and Transitional Devices both can function as


connectors so, put the suitable one if given in the paragraph.
Type Examples
Addition
Additionally I like reading books. Additionally, I enjoy watching movies.
Moreover She's a great singer. Moreover, she's a talented songwriter.
Furthermore He's a good player. Furthermore, he's a great team leader.
Also I play football. Also, I play basketball.
Contrast
However I wanted to go to the beach. However, it was raining.
On the other hand He's very outgoing. On the other hand, his brother is shy.
Nevertheless I'm tired. Nevertheless, I'll finish my work.
In contrast She's very quiet. In contrast, her sister is very loud.
Time
Meanwhile I'll meet you at 5. Meanwhile, I'll finish my work.
Next We'll eat dinner. Next, we'll watch a movie.
Then I'll study for my exam. Then, I'll go to bed.
Finally First, we'll eat breakfast. Then, we'll go to school. Finally, we'll come home.
Cause and
Effect Therefore I didn't study. Therefore, I failed the test.
Consequently She exercised regularly. As a result, she lost weight.
Thus He worked hard. Thus, he succeeded.
As a result We didn't plan. As a result, we got lost.
Example
For instance I love trying new foods. For instance, I recently tried pasta.
Specifically He's a talented musician. Specifically, he plays the guitar.
In particular She's a great writer. In particular, she writes poetry.
Namely I have two favorite sports. Namely, football and basketball.
Emphasis Notably She's not only smart but also kind. Notably, she volunteers at a local charity.
Importantly He's a great player. Importantly, he's also a team leader.
Significantly She's a talented artist. Significantly, her paintings are very valuable.
Especially I love reading books. Especially, I love reading fiction.
Sequence
Firstly Firstly, we'll eat breakfast. Then, we'll go to school.
Secondly First, we'll eat breakfast. Secondly, we'll brush our teeth.
Thirdly First, we'll eat breakfast. Second, we'll brush our teeth. Third, we'll go to school.
At Last At last, we'll review the material before the test.
Conclusion
In conclusion In conclusion, I believe we should recycle more.
To sum up To sum up, the trip was amazing!
In summary In summary, we need to work harder.
Finally Finally, I believe we can make a difference.
