DAY 2: ESTIMATING LENGTHS AND MEASUREMENTS

Mental Sums
1. 60 Seconds make minutes.
2. 60 minutes make hour.
3. How many hours make one day?
4. How many days make one week?
5. 48 hours make days.

Working Sum
Estimation of objects can be done with some materials such as finger span/hand span, feet,
etc.
Instruments such as ruler, tape rule, metre rule, etc can be used to measure length and
distance.
The units of length are cm, mm, dm, km, m.
Long distances are measured in kilometres (short form: km).
10 millimetres (mm) = 1 Centimetre (cm)
10 Centimetres (cm) = 1 Decimetre (dm)
10 Decimetre (dm) = 1 Metre (m)
100 Centimetres (cm) = 1 Metre (m)
1 Kilometre (km) = 1000 Metres (m)
½ Kilometre (km) = 500 Metres (m)
¼ Kilometre (km) = 250 Metres (m)

Activity: (Estimating is accurate guessing)

Estimate the width or heights of these objects to the nearest centimetres. Then, measure them.
Copy and complete the table below:
Rough Estimate By measurement
Teacher‟s Table
Width of door
Width of window

DAY 3: ESTIMATION OF LENGTHS

Mental sums
1) 2 + 2 + 4 + 6 =
2) What is a gross?
3) 45 – 40 – 3 =
4) A score is equal to
5) 15 × 5 =

8
PRIMARY 4
3RD TERM

Working sum
Examples:
1. Change these km to metres
i. 1.241km
ii. 3.4km
Solution:
(i) Since 1 km = 1000m
1.241km = 1.241 x 1000m
= 1241 metres

(ii) Since 1 km = 1000m

3.4km = 3.4 x 1000m
= 3400 metres

2. Change these metres to km

i. 2300m
ii. 6791m
Solution:
(i) Since 1000m = 1 km
2300m = 2300 ÷1000
= 2.3km

(ii) Since 1000m = 1 km

6791m = 6791 ÷ 1000
= 6.791km

Class work
1. Change 21.32km to metres.
2. Convert 4125m to km.
3. Express 5.35km in metres.

DAY 4: ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF LENGTH

Mental Sums
i. How many centimetres are in 2 metres?
ii. Subtract 27 from 9
iii. What is ½ of 20?
iv. Divide 22 by 2
v. Divide 25 by 5

9
PRIMARY 4
3RD TERM

Working sum

Examples: Addition of Length

1) 2m 72cm + 1m 56cm 2) 3km 241m + 1km 722m
Solution: Solution:
m cm km m
2 72 3 241
+ 1 56 + 1 722
4 28 4 963

Examples: Subtraction of Length

1) 6.80m – 2.57m
2) 9km 265m – 4km 363m
Solution:
1) m 2) km m
6.80 9 265
– 2.57 – 4 363
4.23 4 902

CLASS EXERCISE
(1) 1.58m + 8.26m + 1.41m =
