QUESTION 2
2.1 The graph below shows how the number of families of species has changed over time.
The arrows indicate periods of mass extinctions.
2.1.1 Explain the term “mass extinction” (2)
2.1.2 When did the Mesozoic era start? (2)
2.1.3 Approximately how many families of species died out at the end of the
Paleozoic era? Show ALL workings. (3)
2.1.4 What happened to the number of families after each mass extinction? (1)
2.1.5 Scientists have come to the conclusion that the earth is currently experiencing the
6th Mass Extinction which is mainly caused by natural things. What is the cause of
this extinction? (1)
2.1.6 Describe ways in which the “cause” mentioned in 2.1.5. threaten biodiversity and
the natural environment? (4)

2.2 Study the diagram below and answer the questions that follow:
A B
2.2.1 Identify which organism A or B is termed the ‘Missing Link’ (1)
2.2.2 Give a reason why scientists regard the organism in 1.1 as the ‘missing link’. (2)
2.2.3 Define the terms ice age. (2)
2.2.4 Explain how the ice ages influenced life on earth through extinction and
redistribution of species. (2)
(8)
2.3 The figure below shows different organisms in an ecosystem.
2.3.1. State what is represented by the arrows between the organisms in this
ecosystem. (1)

Question 3
The effect of temperature on the action of pepsin, a protein-digesting enzyme present in
stomach fluid, was tested. In this investigation, 20 ml of stomach fluid and 10 grams of protein
were placed in each of five test tubes. The tubes were then kept at different temperatures.
After 24 hours, the contents of each tube were tested to determine the amount of protein
that had been digested. The results are shown in the table below.
Amount of protein digested at different temperatures
Temperature Amount of protein
(°C) digested (g)
5 0,5
10 1,0
20 4,0
37 9,5
85 0,0
3.1. In this investigation identify the:
(a) Independent variable (1)
(b) Dependent variable (1)
3.2. The investigation was repeated using 10 grams of starch instead of protein in each
test tube. The contents were tested to determine the amount of starch that had been
digested.
3.2.1 Predict the outcome of the investigation with starch instead of protein. Provide
reasons. (3)
3.2.2 Explain how a starch test can determine the presence of starch in a food
sample. (2)
3.3 Draw a suitable graph to represent the results of the investigation.
