Gas Exchange System
P is trachea (windpipe)
Q is Alveoli
R is diaphragm
1. Label P, Q and R on the diagram above. [3]
2. The diagram above shows a piece of apparatus which can be used to model the mechanism of the
gas exchange system. Explain how the parts of the gas exchange system control breathing. [4]
When inhale (breathe in), air is drawn into the lungs.
Lungs get bigger and it expands, therefore, the capacity for air intake increases.
Exhale (breathe out), this is where air is pushed out.
The diaphragm relaxes and moves up.

3. Use the diagram above to explain how the volume
of a person’s lungs can be measured. [3]
Exhale through the tube
Air bubbles
After the deep breath, the air in the bottle is equal
to the capacity of the lungs.
4. Explain how smoking can damage the gas exchange system, and the effect this has on a person. [4]
Smoking can block airways and this makes it harder to breathe. Less oxygen goes into the body,
which makes the heart work harder and this could lead to a heart attack.
5. For each statement below, write whether it is true or false. [4]
True
When you exercise you breathe faster
False
When you exercise you need less energy
False
After exercise, breathing returns to normal immediately
False
During exercise the breathing rate is decreased
6. What is asthma? [2]
Asthma is a condition in which your airways becomes narrow and swell which makes it harder
to breathe. It is usually an allergic reaction such as to dust, pet hair, etc.
