DISCIPLINE &

COMPETENCE
MEANING OF DISCIPLINE
• The word discipline is derived from the Latin word “disciplina”, which
means teaching, learning, and growing.
• According to Ordway Tead, discipline is the orderly conduct of affairs
by the members of an organization, who adhere harmoniously in
forwarding towards the end which the group has in view and willingly
recognize that.
• Discipline brings stability and structure into a person’s life.
It teaches a person to be responsible and respectful. The
observance of well-defined rules is the basis of society. If
there were no discipline, people would do whatever they
wanted and make mistakes without putting the
consideration of others first and foremost. It promotes good
human behavior to better society and make it a more
enjoyable place for everyone to live.
Discipline is the bridge between
goals and accomplishments.
"Talent without discipline is like an
octopus on roller skates. There's plenty of
movement, but you never know if it's going
to be forward, backwards, or sideways."
Self-discipline
• Self-discipline is the ability to control yourself and to make yourself
work hard or behave in a particular way without needing anyone else
to tell you what to do.
• Self-discipline is saying NO to things that will keep you from reaching
your goals and saying “YES” to things that will enable you to reach
your objectives.
• Self-discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger you
become. The less you train it, the weaker you become.
How Self-Discipline will help you out?
• Boost your self-esteem
• Help you accomplish your goals
• Gives you the ability to change your life any way you like
• Help you to be more decisive
• Help you develop inner strength
• It is required for doing a good job in everything you want to change or
achieve
The Five Pillars of Self-Discipline
According to Steve Pavlina the five pillars of discipline are:
• Acceptance - Acceptance means that you understand that you can not change anything
until you fully accept it
• Willpower - Willpower is the ability to overcome obstacles and resist temptations
• Hard Work - Hard work is simply putting forth a consistent effort toward a specific goal
• Industry - Industry is the willingness to invest money, time, and energy into something
for a long period of time.
• Persistence - Persistence is the ability to continue working towards a goal despite
setbacks or failures.
How to Develop Self-Discipline
1. Choose your goal
2. Find your motivation
3. Identify obstacles
4. Replace old habits
5. Monitor your progress
COMPETENCE
• Competence is the set of demonstrable characteristics and skills that enable,
and improve the efficiency or performance of a job.
• Some scholars see "competence" as a combination of practical and
theoretical knowledge, cognitive skills, behavior and values used to improve
performance; or as the state or quality of being adequately or well qualified,
having the ability to perform a specific role.
• Competence is the ability to do something successfully or efficiently
COMPETENCE
• Competence means that you have the ability to do something well. You are
capable of performing a task or job effectively.
Example:

Ifyou’re a seller, then your ability to establish trust with

customers affects the sales you make. Being able to establish
credibility is a part of your competence in that job.
Four Stages of Competence

• Unconscious incompetence
• Conscious incompetence
• Conscious competence
• Unconscious competence
Unconscious incompetence
• This is the stage where you don’t yet know the degree of your incompetence.
In other words, you don’t know what you don’t know.
• This stage is generally the most challenging, as you are unconscious of the
fact that there are areas that need improvement or things you need to learn.
Conscious incompetence
• This is where you start to develop an awareness of what you don’t know.
• This stage can be uncomfortable because you must acknowledge your
shortcomings. However, recognizing your shortcomings also motivates you
to move forward and learn the skill so you can move beyond this stage as
quickly as possible.
Conscious competence
• After dedicating yourself to the improvement of a skill through formal
training, repeated practice and participation, competence grows and starts to
show. At this stage, you have learned and practiced enough to perform a task
with a degree of quality and independence.
Unconscious competence
• In this final stage, you have now internalized the knowledge you need to
perform a task and perfected your practical skills. You also no longer require
concentration or active thought. You can complete the required tasks with
ease and speed. You are also capable of mentoring team members who are in
an earlier stage of the learning model.
