Individual Assignment: Data Summarization and Sampling Methods
Course: COMM 839: Health Statistics and Computing
Marks: 15 marks
Due Date: 11 April, 2025
Objective:
The goal of this assignment is to assess your understanding of the concepts covered in
Module 3: Summarizing Data and Sampling Methods, including measures of central
tendency, measures of variation, sampling methods, and errors in sampling.
Instructions:
1. Provide clear and detailed explanations for each question.
2. Show all calculations, where required, with steps clearly outlined.
3. Use examples to support your explanations where applicable.
4. For computational questions, include formulas and steps used in solving them.
5. Submit your assignment in a typed format (Word or PDF) or neatly handwritten
and scanned.
Assignment Questions
Section 1: Measures of Central Tendency (5 Marks)
1. Consider the following dataset representing daily sugar consumption (in grams)
for a group of 10 individuals:
45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 150
a. Calculate the mean, median, and mode for this dataset.
b. Discuss which measure of central tendency best represents the data and explain
why.
2. Give one real-life example where the median is preferred over the mean and
explain your reasoning.
Section 2: Measures of Variation (5 Marks)
1. Using the dataset from Section 1, calculate the following:
a. Range
b. Variance (sample variance formula)
c. Standard deviation
Show all calculations clearly, including formulas and steps.
2. Explain the significance of the standard deviation in describing the variability of
the data. Provide a real-world example where understanding variability is
important in health statistics.
Section 3: Sampling Methods (3 Marks)
1. A researcher wants to study the prevalence of diabetes in a city. Describe how
you would apply stratified random sampling to ensure representation of age
groups (e.g., children, adults, seniors) in the sample.
2. Briefly differentiate between random sampling and convenience sampling,
providing one advantage and one limitation for each method.
Section 4: Errors in Sampling (2 Marks)
1. A survey on healthcare access was conducted using telephone interviews.
a. Identify two potential sampling errors or biases that could arise from this
method.
b. Suggest strategies to minimize these errors.
Submission Instructions
• Submit your completed assignment by Friday, 11 April, 2025 through the course
LMS.
