Power I Formation “PIE”- Base 2
21
The following formations / plays can be run left or right.
I’ve only drawn up the play to one side.
I have been running this variation of the Power I since around 2011. It is very powerful
at the youth football level. I normally run unbalanced or Big about 80% of the time.
The PIE formation is a powerful running formation. It is
very useful when you only have 1 speed back at TB and
you may have 2 or 3 FBs or TEs to use at blocking backs.
I use when I have a slower than average backfield and
very deadly when you have an above average backfield.
OLM splits less than 1 foot. At hole maybe 3 foot if no one in Gap to try to widen Defenders.

Faster quicker backs can get deeper

Side by side TB lines up over guard when unbalanced
or BIG line call. If in even set TB will be
over Center

The Deep call is best used to get outside the OTs
and run wide. Or if you have a great open field
runner have the BBs block LION and let BC cut off
the slow LM blocks or Zone Larry / Roger and let
the WB and FB Lead DUO on the main defensive
tackler usually DE or LB.

Running the Ladder Drill for RBs
Purpose: To teach running backs that are running outside the B gap to stop cutting
back into the inside and heart of the Defense. They should learn to weave outside
Do not cut back
to the near sideline and run the ladder 3 yards from sideline to score. into pursuit
Set Up: Rings or Cones set up to simulate one side of the Offensive Line. 3 coaches /
dads / players to hold bags to simulate defense. 1 coach to simulate the block on
the contain man. Coach or Center can snap the football to the running back.
Coaching Points:
• Do not let RBs cut back to the inside on this drill
Run tough
• The RBs should weave toward the near sideline between two bags
• RBs should use stiff arms in open field – attack outside D shoulder
• RBs will read butt of blocker at the contain point cut up or outside
• Football needs to be in correct position for stiff arms
• All RBs should run through this drill Use stiff arm with inside hand on
CB outside shoulder to push off
• 95% of the time try to get to the ladder only a few cases to cut
Defender and bounce to outside
back inside
• Do not get too close to sideline at least one yard away
• Might want to teach RBs the 3/5 yard line cut back to mess with a
pursuing Defender
