After watching videos, I think that before going to class, I need to prepare
materials such as games, flashcards and activities to help students remember the
lesson better. Give specific examples, illustrations, interesting and useful games for
students to remember. Find songs related to the lesson, prepare slides neatly so that
students can visualize the lesson. About the things I would like to learn and apply
or avoid for my own teaching, I think :
Should:
1. PBL: Project-Based Learning
o TBL over a longer period of time, such as a week
o Students research the task- Teacher supports and guides
o Students present or perform tasks
o Teacher monitors and assesses
2. TBL: Task-Based Learning
o Teacher sets a 'real-world' task for students
o Teacher provides language support
o Students perform tasks
o Teacher monitors and assesses
o Mixes a range of structures
o Good for confidence building
3. TPR: Total Physical Response
o Teacher combines physical movement or actions and language
learning
o Excellent for action verbs, body parts, prepositions of place (among
others)
o Appeals to kinesthetic learners
o Energizing, fun and memorable
4. TTT: Test, Teach, Test
o Teacher tests students' understanding of target language through a task
o Teacher teaches based on this assessment
o Teacher tests again with a further task
5. Guided Discovery / Inductive Study
o Teacher presents language
o Students attempt to understand the 'rules' behind it
o Teacher supports and guides
o Students do control and freer practice as usual
Should Not:
1. Completing Student Sentences
o Students need time to think about what to say - give them time!
o Finishing their sentences stops them thinking and learning
2. The Board
o Don't talk to the board! Students may not be able to hear or
understand
o Plan your board work to make it clear and easy to read. Make good
use of color and space. Write clearly!
3. Check Understanding Properly
o Don't ask "Do you understand?" and don't assume students
understand. Test it!
o Use concept checking questions (CCQs) and instruction checking
questions (ICQs)
4. Admitting Mistakes
o Everyone makes mistakes- Don't bluff
o Don't know, say so. But find out (later)!
o Make an obviously fake joke out of it: "I was just testing you!"
5. Echoing Students
o Don't repeat student answers. It undermines student-to-student
communication
o If you or the class didn't hear or understand, say so. If you did,
respond normally!
6. Too Much Teacher Talking Time
o Students need as much speaking time as possible in class
o Be to the point with instructions, explanations, and examples
o A rule of 70% students and 30% teachers is good
