but finding that the lion did not pursue him, he turned back and went up to him. As he came near, the lion
put out his paw, which was swollen and bleeding, and Androcles found that a huge thorn had got into it
and was causing all the pain. He pulled out the thorn and bound up the paw of the lion, who was soon

Five Elements of a Short Story

1. Setting – It is when and where the story happens. It also helps in creating the atmosphere of the story.
Example: Place – at church, in the market, under the bridge, and near the hospital
Time – last January, by winter, last New year, during summer

2. Character -Is the person or animal that portrays in the story and is introduced through
“characterization” or the presentation of character motives through his “SAT” Speech, Actions,
Thoughts)

3
Six Types of Characters
1. Protagonist – is the good character and is often opposed, exploited or victimized
2. Antagonist – is the bad character, causes problems & sufferings to other characters
3. Static – is the character who does not change, is consistently bad or good from the beginning up
to the end of the story
4. Dynamic – is the character who changes and transforms from being good to bad/bad to good
5. Round – is the character that is hard to describe & predict and has many qualities & emotions
6. Flat – is the character who is easy to describe and predict

3. Conflict – is the problem which the main character needs to solve

INTEGRATION: But sometimes, if we may relate this to our real-life scenario, our nature just
works against us if we are irresponsible in our role in taking care of it as what God originally designed
us as human beings. So, we should always bear in mind to always BE KIND not just to other people but
to all the things around us including animals and nature.

4. Plot - is the order of events that make up a story. The plot of a story is a series of interconnected events
in which every occurrence has a specific purpose. A plot is all about establishing connections, suggesting
causes, and showing relationships. It is the storyline plan or scheme.
The plot may be presented through literary devices such as the following:
1. Chronological-sequential arrangement of events.

2. En Medias Res - This is a Latin phrase which means “into the middle of things”. Unlike the
direct narration pattern of story events, another related story is narrated inside the main
plotline. It is narrating from the midpoint rather than the beginning- usually opening with a
dramatic action rather than the exposition.

3. Flashback - This device presents to the reader all or most of the events that have taken place
before the events that are currently unfolding in the story. The events may be past narratives by characters
of their dreams or memories to create a background to the present situation, place or person. These may
be placed at the beginning or may be inserted into the normal chronological order.

4
5. Theme – is what the story all about, is the “central idea” or main message” the author wants his
readers to understand and to live by
