Discursive essay -- Steps

 Introduction
 Thesis –Present both sides of the argument impartially. A neutral tone is the key.
Examples:
@Solar energy is a cost effective solution to burning fossil fuels for electricity, however lower
income families cannot afford the installation costs.

@Some studies indicate that teacher comments written in red may have no effect on
students’ emotions, however other studies suggest that seeing red ink on papers could cause
some students unnecessary stress.

@Space research opens unlimited avenues to study the possibilities of habitable planets in
the universe, however space research, so far has not yielded much hope of such a possibility.

 Use tentative language (some studies, could cause, may have, other studies, critical
research, some experts etc)
 Signposting: comma and linker…..NEVERTHELESS, ALTHOUGH, YET, ALBEIT, REGARDLESS,
WHILE etc. Do not use ‘But’.
 Write a list of pros and cons—for each pro there should be a corresponding con.
 At least 3 sets of pros and cons are required which become your claims and counter claims.
Take a new paragraph for each set.
 Follow the order ---CLAIM/COUNTER CLAIM-ELABORATION-EVIDENCE.
 CONCLUSION---MIRROR/ RESTATE THE THESIS
 Use ‘this essay will discuss, this essay has discussed’ in the introduction and conclusion
respectively.
 Do thorough research into the topic.
