FIGURES OF SPEECH

1. Simile - A simile is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things using the words
“like” or “as.” Eg As brave as a lion , The giant roared like a bull , run like a deer , sings like a
lark
2. Metaphor – A simile is a implied metaphor . When we say ‘Rustom was a lion on the
battlefield .’- it is a metaphor .Two unlike things are compared directly without using ‘like’
or ‘as’ .
e.g Variety is the spice of life, Life is a dream
3. Personification is a figure of speech that is used to attribute human characteristics to
something that is not human. It can also be used to personify an abstract quality.
Eg The moon veiled her face , Opportunity knocks at the door but once
4. Hyperbole – The word means exaggeration and hyperbole represents things as greater or
lesser than they really are .
Eg She wept oceans of tears , All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand
5. Repetition – In this a word is repeated for emphasis or for rhythm
Eg For dust thou art , and shalt to dust return ,
“A little grave
A little, little grave!”
6. Alliteration – This is a repetition of one or more similar sounds or letters at the beginning
of two or more words
Eg How high his highness holds his haughty head , Till the vessel shook with a shivering
shock

1. If seen from above the factory the workers would look like clock parts .
2. Laughter is the music of the soul .
3. The bottle rolled off the table like a teardrop.
4. Forget knocking it out of the park, Frank can knock a baseball out of the continent .
5. Her hope was a fragile seed.
6. He roared with the force of a thousand lions.
7. The theatre is his home .
8. Words are the weapons with which we wound .
9. His brain is the size of a pea .
10. Justice is blind and, at times, deaf .
11. Her hair was a lovely golden river flowing down her shoulders.
12. The detective listened to her tales with a wooden face .
