-Do you live in a house or in an apartment? I live in an apartment on the 4th floor.
-Is there an elevator? Yes, there is.
-What’s your apartment like? There are two bedrooms, a bathroom and a small kitchen.
- How many rooms are there in your house? There are 3 bedrooms and a large family
room.
- Is there a garden in your house? Yes, there is a small garden in front of the house.

THERE IS / THERE ARE.


• We use there is /there are to say that something/ someone exists. (to indicate o
describe)
There is a post office on the corner of the street.
There are six hundred people at the party.

• We use there is with a singular noun:


There is a sofa in the room.
• We use there are with a plural noun:
There are four children in the garden.

• The short form of there is = there’s:


There’s a supermarket in the next street. (Spoken form)

• The negative form is like this:


There is not /there are not

• We use the shorts form when we are speaking: there isn’t/ there aren’t.
There isn’t any sugar in the coffee.
There aren’t any students in class today.

• Questions are like this:


Is there a church in the area?
Are there any towels in the bathroom?

• We can give short answers like this:


Is there a dog in the house? Yes, there is/ No, there isn’t.
Are there any cars in the park? Yes, there are/ No there aren’t.

Exercise # 1. Complete the dialogues with the correct form of there is / there are.
