A Hadrosaurus skeleton was found in 1838 in a clay pit in

Haddonfield, New Jersey. However, it was not until 1858 that

people realized that the bones were that of an almost
complete dinosaur skeleton! It was named Hadrosaurus,
pronounced: Had-roe-sore-uss, which means “bulky lizard.”

According to the story, John E. Hopkins had invited William

Parker Foulke to his home for dinner. During the meal, Hopkins told
Foulke about the strange bones that his men had found twenty years
earlier. Dr. Joseph Leidy was asked to come to the site, and he studied
the bones and made sketches of them that were presented to the
scientific community. Leidy was considered the father of modern
paleontology for this spectacular find in North America, and he named
the dinosaur Hadrosaurus foulkii. Because of its obvious historical
importance, Hadrosaurus foulkii was designated the New Jersey state
dinosaur on June 13, 1991.

Triceratops

Pronounced: (tri-SER-uh-tahps)

"Three-Horned Face" (Tri- means

three)
This plant eater or
herbivore had an enormous head and an unusual face.

The animal had a parrot-like beak, one horn over each eye,

and a smaller horn on its nose. Behind Triceratops's head,

there was a thick bony plate that protected its neck, shoulders,
bone, and skin.
The eight-ton animal walked on four strong, sturdy legs.
However, Triceratops was surprisingly fast: It could run about 30
miles per hour!

We have found fossils of Triceratops in Montana in the United

States.
