Officers Training Academy - Chennai
Viewing One Of the Most Prestigious, Choreographed Events
The Students of DAV-PKN had the privilege to attend Officers
Training Academy (OTA)-Chennai’s prestigious Passing Out Parade
of SSC-118 and SSC(Women)-32 on 31st August 2024 at St. Thomas
Mount, one of the oldest cantonments (since 1774).
The students entered a place, which saw wars that men of their ages
used to fight, the very place British started its empire.

At 05:10 hrs.; The transport arrived at the gates of OTA-Chennai
At 05:30 hrs.; The students sat down in the 3rd row, in the
PARAMESWARAN Drill Square, seated ready and excited to visit one
of the most highly choreographed, organized events their country
has to offer.
At 05:50 hrs.; The announcer welcomes the audience. He, on behalf
of OTA, thanks the parents of the cadets to have sent them to serve
the largest democracy in the world, India. The students learnt that
the OTA-Chennai (formerly Madras), was established in 1962, during
the Sino-Indian wars, to recruit and train men for battle.
The students learn that they are about to witness the Passing Out
Parade of the 118th Short Service Commission and the 32nd Short
Service Commission (Women), along with 57 men from friendly
countries.
Around 20,000 cadets as of now passed out of OTA-Chennai, 2967 of
them were women; 74 Sri Lankan Officers were commissioned.
At 05:59 hrs.; The Band gets stationed at the top of the
PARAMESWARAN Gate.
At the sharp strike of 06:00 hrs.; The Gate opened, and the parade
walks out in unison, 6 in a row as they split into 3, and march on the
either side of the gate, taking their company positions.
6 companies take their positions, the parade is led by Parade Leader:
Tanishka Damodaran.
On the order of the leader, the parade stomps on the ground. As the
band starts to hit the drums, the parade taps their feet on the
ground in sync with the beat of the drums.

At 06:10 hrs.; The Academy Colours, Nishaan, is brought out to
parade. The students stand up as the flag barrier takes the Centre
stage.
The Red signifying sacrifice and The Grey signifying courage.
From 06:15 hrs. to 06:30 hrs.; The parade pays respect to Majors
arriving at the Drill Square in horses as they salute to them in
unison, as the Band plays Roshini.
At 06:32 hrs.; Reviewing Officer Lt. Col. Shaijin Shajit arrived at the
square on behalf of Lt. Col. N.S. Subramaniam and received salute
from the parade.
The parade leader marched front to salute the Reviewing Officer.
A Willys Jeep, colour coded to the flag’s colours, arrived. The parade
leader and the reviewing officer and passed through each company
as they saluted the officer.
At 06:50 hrs.; The Parade marched around the square, as they
passed us, we stood up for young and brave who are going to give
their lives for the nation.

An officer behind us taking notes as each company turned around to
take their place.
At 07:00 hrs.; 5 officers marched from their companies and joined
the parade leader and marched to front to receive their awards from
the Reviewing Officer.
Battalion Army Officer Sammat Singh was awarded Sword of
Armour
Officer Silmat Singh Rakhi was awarded Gold Medal
Officer Tanishka Damodaran was awarded Silver Medal
Officer Tejash Chandradoshi was awarded Bronze Medal
Jr. Officer Mohammed Moudin from Maldives was awarded
Medal of Excellence
Phillora Company was awarded Chief of Army Staff Banner for
Best Allrounder
At 07:15 hrs.; The Reviewing Officer addressed the parade. He
congratulated them for conducting an excellent parade. He wished
them prosperity and good health. He expects them to conduct
themselves, from the trainings of the Academy, which molded them
to men and women of character.
From 07:25 to 07:33 hrs.; the companies turned to face each other
and formed themselves to groups of three, then they marched to
front in rows of six and they dismiss, as the band plays All For One
and One For All.
At 08:00 hrs.; the students dismissed, inspired and filled with
patriotism and respect to all the men and women who give their
lives for the nation.
