The importance of stories: Myths and Legends

Stories have been important since the beginning of civilization.
Myths and legends are types of stories that are part of people’s
culture and tradition. Old people often tell them to young
people, so they can live on for a long time.

A myth is a story with a purpose. Ancient civilizations used

myths to explain natural events like storms, floods, strong
winds and seasons. The plot usually has a hero searching for
something on a long and dangerous journey. In ancient times,
people believed that gods and goddesses controlled nature on Earth. Many myths
feature gods. Who are Greek Gods? They include. Zeus, god of the sea,
earthquakes and horses, and Athena, goddess of wisdom and war.

A legend is a story about people. It could be true and some parts of the story could
come from real history. A legend usually has a hero as a main character. The hero
isn’t a superhuman like the gods and goddesses in a myth, but is a man or woman
who has extraordinary qualities. Legends are usually about a fierce fight between
good and bad characters, and the hero wins.

Let’s look at two different legends. According to celtic legend, King Arthur was the
king of Camelot in the late 5th and early 6th centuries because he pulled a sword
from a famous stone. We don't know if King Arthur and his wife Queen Guinevere
really lived. Above the Polish town of Zakopane, a mountain peak forms the outline
of a sleeping man. The Sleeping Knight, the legend goes, will wake from his sleep if
trouble comes, and rise to save Zakopave.
