PHIL 235 Final Assignment: Philosophy Essay

Assignment: Write a philosophy essay that takes and defends a philosophically informed stance in
response to one and only one of the following prompts. Make sure to use relevant concepts, views,
and arguments from the course material to develop your line of argumentation and defend your stance.

Topics

Topic 1: Healthcare as a Right


Is healthcare a fundamental human right? Argue that either (1) yes, healthcare is a fundamental human
right OR (2) no, healthcare is not a fundamental human right. In your argument, appeal to relevant
course material such as our discussion about the definition of “health,” as well as Buchanan, “The
Right to a Decent Minimum of Healthcare.” Be sure to address what your position entails about how
we should structure the healthcare system.

Topic 2: Physician Assisted Suicide


Should Physician Assisted Suicide (PAD) be allowed, and, if so, under what conditions? Argue that
(1) PAD should be allowed (under some conditions) OR (2) PAD should not be allowed. If you argue
for (1), make sure you discuss under what conditions PAD should be allowed.

Topic 3: Abortion
We have considered a variety of views about the moral status of abortion – including those developed
by Marquis, Warren, and Thomson. Choose ONE of these views to focus on. Explain the view and
the author’s main argument for the view, and then develop a philosophical objection to it.

Topic 4: Global Health Justice


We have discussed a variety of issues related to global health justice. Identify some of these injustices,
and then identify which one of the four main normative ethical theories – consequentialism,
deontology, virtue ethics, care ethics – is best at helping us address these injustices. Argue that your
chosen normative ethical theory is the best theory when it comes to helping us consider and combat
global injustice in health.
