Many early American ____________________ had very strong ____________________

Unit 2 Better to Die

Ancient Greek ____________________ were fierce ____________________. The most fearsome of

all Greek soldiers were the Spartans. Spartans believed that it was better to die in battle than to

be a ____________________. There is no better example of Spartan bravery than their famous “last

stand” at Thermopylae.

A huge Persian army, ____________________ ____________________ ____________________

____________________, was advancing on Greece. The Greeks decided that the best place to stop

them was at a ____________________ ____________________ in Thermopylae. They sent the Spartans.

Three hundred of the bravest Spartan warriors traveled to Thermopylae,

____________________ ____________________ the Spartan king, Leonidas. On the way, they were joined

by several thousand other soldiers. Even with these ____________________ soldiers, the Greeks were

still ____________________ ____________________. They weren’t scared, though. They had a big

advantage. The pass at Thermopylae was so narrow that only one ____________________ could pass

at a time. Using this advantage, the smaller Greek army ____________________ ____________________ the

massive Persian forces for two days of fierce attacks.

They probably could have stopped the Persians completely, but they were

____________________ by one of their own. A Greek soldier told the Persian leader, Xerxes, about a

____________________ ____________________ ____________________ that went around the narrow pass.

Xerxes sent soldiers down the trail, and soon ____________________ the Greek army. When

Leonidas learned of this, he knew his army could not win. He sent most of the Greek soldiers

away, but remained with his 300 ____________________ Spartan warriors. They fought until every last

Greek soldier was ____________________ or ____________________. The Spartans may have lost the battle,

but they never lost their courage. For that, they will be remembered forever.

Unit 5 Go with the Flow

Mexico City is the third largest city in the world, and the largest in ____________________

____________________. Like any big city, it has problems. Its biggest problem isn’t ____________________

or drugs though, as one might expect. Mexico City’s biggest problem is water.

Mexico City hasn’t always had this problem, but then again, the area hasn’t always been

a city. Mexico City has its ____________________ in the Aztec ____________________, Tenochtitlan--a city

built on an ____________________ in the middle of a lake. ____________________ Mexico City has

____________________ to cover the entire lake area and more. Of course the water is gone now, but

problems remain.

The soft clay of the old ____________________ is ____________________ with water. The roads

and buildings of Mexico City are slowly sinking into this soft clay--in some places, more than a

____________________ a year. Because this clay can’t ____________________ much more water,

____________________ is also a major problem.

____________________ being surrounded by water, Tenochtitlan ____________________

experienced flooding. When the city was being built, the lake water was salty and it often

____________________ ____________________ the island. Aztec engineers solved the problem by building

a series of ____________________ ____________________ and dams to control the water flow. They also

built a huge ____________________ to keep only fresh water in the area around the island.

In 1521 Tenochtitlan was captured by Spanish ____________________ Hernan Cortes. It’s too

bad that Cortes almost completely destroyed the city before ____________________ it as Mexico City.

If he had ____________________ the Aztec engineering, then maybe Mexico City wouldn’t have the

water problems that it does today!

Color ____________________ say that different colors can change our ____________________, and

our bodies can improve health by ____________________ ____________________ ____________________.

Many scientists question this idea. They say color therapists cannot prove their “patients” were

can have a strong ____________________ on our ____________________.

The four strongest mood-changing colors are ____________________ to be blue, green, red,

____________________ ____________________ mean danger, but color therapists claim that the color red

gives us energy and makes our hearts ____________________ ____________________. Yellow is an

emotional, cheerful color. Paint your room yellow if you want to feel happy and confident.

You don’t need to see a therapist to use colors well. Try putting blue pictures on your

Andrew’s mother was angry. She had sent him to the store to buy ____________________

tomatoes, but when she looked in the bag all of the tomatoes were green! And what was this?

When she looked at Andrew’s feet, she saw that he was wearing different ____________________

____________________ ____________________. There are several jobs where ____________________

____________________ ____________________ is necessary. Imagine a colorblind person painting your

house or ____________________ your hair!

Color blindness can ____________________ your daily life. Cooking can be ____________________

Others can’t see the difference between red and green apples, or between ketchup and chocolate

____________________. Traffic lights can also ____________________ ____________________ to colorblind

drivers. Many countries design lights to be different ____________________ or ____________________, so

colorblind drivers don’t become dangerously confused.

There is no cure for color blindness, but ____________________ can live very normal lives.

Andrew’s mother took him to the doctor for a ____________________ ____________________. They

discovered that he had the most common form of the ____________________; he could not tell the

____________________ ____________________ because her muscles were so ____________________ from her

being asleep. She was very lucky to be ok.

Rachel was probably sleepwalking because she was ____________________. She had gone to

bed late because she had an art exam the next day. Stress can cause sleepwalking, and so can

sleeping too little.

Like most sleepwalkers, Rachel did not remember her adventure when she

____________________ ____________________. Although many people sleepwalk with their eyes open,

they are actually still dreaming. They don’t know ____________________ ____________________

____________________ around them.

Sleepwalking is not usually dangerous, but regular sleepwalkers must ____________________

also a good idea to remove sharp objects and ____________________ from the bedroom.

____________________ small bells to exits can also help by ____________________ ____________________ a

It’s just a dream!

In a lucid dream, a person discovers they are dreaming, but they do not wake up. Some

Some people have lucid dreams ____________________ ____________________. Others have to

teach themselves ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ ____________________

whether they are dreaming or awake. ____________________ they realize that they are dreaming they

One way to have lucid dreams is to remember what “happened” while you were sleeping.

Try keeping a dream diary. Record your dreams every morning when you wake up. This will help

your ____________________ ____________________ a dream the next time you are asleep.

You can also ____________________ ____________________ if you are asleep or not. Look at a

Unit 13 Growing Up

The world’s population is growing. By ____________________ there will be ____________________

9 billion people on Earth. That is, 9 billion ____________________ ____________________

____________________, and most of them living in cities. Where will we ever get enough food? 80%

of the world’s ____________________ farmland is already being used. To create more farmland, we

would have to ____________________ ____________________ millions of acres of forests. Many animals

would lose their habitats, and some would ____________________ ____________________. We cannot

continue to expand outwards. It is time to move in a new direction--up!

The solution is called vertical farming. Scientists suggest that we move our farms into the

very places where the food is needed. They ____________________ ____________________ skyscraper

A 50-story farm may sound like a ____________________ of the imagination, but the idea has

Crops will be grown right where they are needed the most. No longer will city residents

Getting fresh fruit and vegetables will be as simple as picking them up at the nearest skyscraper
