What is Thermal Radition –
Thermal radiation is electromagnetic radiation
emitted from a material that is due to the heat of the
material, the characteristics of which depend on its
temperature. An example of thermal radiation is the
infrared radiation emitted by a common household
radiator or electric heater.
Thermal Radiation is the transfer of heat by the
means of the electromagnetic radiation generated by
the thermal motion of particles in matter. For most
bodies on Earth, this electromagnetic radiation lies in
the invisible region of the spectrum known as the
Infrared region.
Importance of Thermal Radition-
Thermal Radiation is responsible for the glow of hot objects i.e. iron is termed
as being red-hot because at that temperature most of the thermal energy
emitted falls in the red band of the spectrum. At an even higher temperature, it
starts emitting a different colour.

Applications of Thermal Radition –
The transmission of electromagnetic waves through
the oven is also known as the microwave oven.
The heat energy emitted by the radiator.
The solar radiations.
The light energy radiated by incandescent lamps.
The emission of gamma rays.
Properties of Thermal Radition –
It travels through a vacuum with the velocity of light.
It travels in a straight line.
It undergoes reflection, refraction, and total internal
reflection.
It exhibits the phenomenon of interference, diffraction,
and polarisation
It is a form of electromagnetic radiation, with a
wavelength ranging from infrared to visible light.
The amount of radiation emitted by an object is directly
proportional to its temperature.
As the temperature increases, so does the amount of
radiation emitted.
Experiment based on Thermal
Radition-
The rate at which a hot body loses heat is directly
proportional to the difference between the temperature of
the hot body and that of its surroundings and depends on
the nature of material and the surface area of the body.
This is Newton's law of cooling.
