Enabling and Configuring Work Folders
Scenario
In this exercise you will:
Install the Work Folders role service
Create a sync share on the file server
Automate settings for users by using Group Policy
Test synchronization
Scenario
You must enable and configure Work Folders to support the requirements of your
users. Domain users have their own Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 tablet
devices and want access to their work data from anywhere. When they return to
work, they want to be able to synchronize these data files. You will use Group
Policy to force the Work Folders settings to users and test the settings.
1. Open Windows PowerShell
On the taskbar, click the Windows PowerShellicon.

2. Add Sync Share Service
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then
press Enter: Add-WindowsFeature FS-SyncShareService. Note that the name
of the feature is case-sensitive.

3. Create Corp Sync Share on File Server
At the Windows PowerShell command prompt, type the following command, and
then press Enter:
New-SyncShare Corp -path C:\CorpData -User "Adatum\Domain Users"

4. Open Server Manager
Click the Server Manager icon to open Server Manager.

5. Verify Corp Sync Share Exists
Click File and Storage Services. Click Work Folders, and then ensure
the Corp sync share exists.

6. Switch to LON-DC1
Switch to 20410D-LON-DC1.
You can also select the machine using the Resources tab.

7. Activate Windows Logon
Press Ctrl + Alt + End to activate the Windows Logon screen.
You need to activate the Ctrl + Alt + Delete sequence to bring up the logon page.
You can do this in one of two ways:
a. By pressing Ctrl + Alt + End within the virtual machine.
b. By selecting Ctrl + Alt + Deletefrom the Commands menu in the upper-
left hand corner of the screen.

8. Sign In to LON-DC1
Sign in to 20410D-LON-DC1 as Adatum\Administrator with the following
password: Pa$$w0rd and press Enter.

9. Open GPMC
In Server Manager, click Tools, and then click Group Policy Management.

10. Create and Link GPO to [Link]
In the Group Policy Management Console, go to Forest: [Link]\
Domains\[Link]. Right-click [Link], and then click Create a GPO
in this domain, and Link it here.

11. Set Name: Work Folders
In the New GPO dialog box, in Name, type: Work Folders and then click OK.

12. Edit Work Folders GPO
Right-click the Work Folders GPO, and then click Edit.

13. Open Specify Work Folders Settings
In the Group Policy Management Editorwindow, go to User Configuration\
Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Work Folders. In
the details pane, double-click Specify Work Folders settings.

14. Enable and Set Options
Click Enabled, and then in Work Folders URL, type: [Link]
[Link]. Select Force automatic setup, and then click OK.

15. Close All Windows
Close all open windows.

16. Switch to LON-CL1
Switch to 20410D-LON-CL1.
You can also select the machine using the Resources tab.

17. Activate Windows Logon

password: Pa$$w0rd and press Enter.

19. Access Desktop
On the Start screen, click Desktop.

20. Open File Explorer
On the taskbar, click the File Explorer icon.

21. Run [Link]
Navigate to C:\Labfiles\Mod10, and then double-click [Link]. This
adds a registry entry to allow unsecured connections to the work folders.

22. Sign Out of LON-CL1
Click the Start button. Sign out of LON-CL1.

23. Sign In as Administrator Again
Sign in to 20410D-LON-CL1 as Adatum\Administrator with the password Pa$$w0rd.

24. Open File Explorer
Click the Desktop tile, and then click File Explorer.

25. Create Text Document in Work Folders
Double-click the Work Folders folder. In the Work Folders folder, right-click an
empty space, point to New, and then click Text Document.

26. Set Name: TestFile2
Name the new text document TestFile2 and then press Enter.

27. Switch to LON-SVR1
Switch to 20410D-LON-SVR1.
You can also select the machine using the Resources tab.

28. Open File Explorer
Open File Explorer.

29. Verify TestFile2 Exists
Navigate to C:\CorpData\Administrator. Ensure the new text file
named TestFile2 exists.

30. Close All Windows
Close all open windows.
