LESSON PLAN IN Earth and Life Science

2nd QUARTER S.Y. 2023-2024

Date: December 11-12, 2023 Subject Teacher: Jan Aian Rey N. Naron

Grade Level: 11-12 (11-ABM, 11-HUMSS) (12-TVL)

Learning Area: Earth and Life Science
Objective: Explain how the products of weathering are carried away by
erosion and deposited elsewhere.

Engage:
Activity: Picture Analysis

 Show students a series of images depicting weathered rocks, soil erosion, and
sediment deposition.
 Ask students to describe what they see and what they think is happening in each
image.

Discussion Prompts:

 What do you observe in these pictures?

 Have you ever seen similar scenarios in your community or somewhere you have
visited?
 What do you think causes these changes in the Earth's surface?

Explore:
Activity: Model Erosion and Deposition

 Provide small groups with trays of sand, water, and straws.

 Instruct students to simulate wind and water erosion by blowing through the straws
and pouring water on sand.
 Have them observe how the sand moves and where it settles.

Discussion Prompts:

 How did the sand react to the wind and water?

 What does this tell us about how weathering products are moved from one place to
another?
 Can you relate the movements of sand to the processes of erosion and deposition?

Explain:
Activity: Concept Mapping

 Students create a concept map linking weathering, erosion, and deposition.

 They should include the agents of erosion (water, wind, ice, and gravity) and types
of weathering (mechanical and chemical).

Discussion Prompts:

 How does weathering contribute to erosion?

 What role do different agents of erosion play in transporting weathered materials?
 Where do the products of erosion end up, and what is this process called?

Elaborate:
Activity: Case Study Analysis

 Groups research and present case studies of local or international areas affected by
erosion and deposition.
 They should include the causes, effects, and any mitigation measures taken.

Discussion Prompts:

 How does erosion and deposition affect the landscape and human activities in your
case study?
 What solutions have been implemented to manage these processes?

Evaluate:
Activity: Reflection Essay

 Students write an essay on the impact of erosion and deposition on the

environment and human activities, using examples from the lesson.

Assessment Questions:

1. Describe how mechanical weathering contributes to erosion.

2. Explain the role of water in the process of sediment deposition.
3. What is the difference between erosion and deposition?
4. How can human activities accelerate the process of erosion?
5. Provide an example of a landform created by deposition.

Sample Activities:
1. Rock Cycle Role Play - Students simulate the rock cycle, including weathering,
erosion, and deposition, by role-playing as particles moving through the cycle.
2. Erosion Walk - Take students on a walk around the school grounds to observe
evidence of erosion and discuss the forces contributing to it.
3. Soil Erosion Experiment - Set up a simple experiment to show the effect of
vegetation on soil erosion using soil-filled trays with and without plant cover.
4. Deposition Art - Have students create artwork using natural materials that
represent how sediment is deposited in different environments, such as deltas or
floodplains.
5. Multimedia Presentation - Students create a video or digital presentation
explaining the concepts of weathering, erosion, and deposition with real-world
examples.
