After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive
powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he
created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were
five awards : literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first
award ceremony.
Nobel's original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from
30,000 to 125,000.
Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are
presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges'[Link] have won numerous
science awards, but relatively few literature prizes. No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II.
Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes.

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the (short)shortage of clean water. Having clean drinking
water is a (base) basic human right. However, acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage (has)have made many sources of water

Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world's water surface, but it is the
dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost sixteen countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles offshore.

Nowadays people are more aware that wildlife all over the world is in danger. Many species of animals are threatened, and could
easily become extinct if we do not make an effort to protect them. There are many reasons for this. In some cases, animals are
hunted for their fur or other valuable parts of their bodies. Some birds, such as parrots, are caught alive, and sold as pets. For many
animals and birds, the problem is that their habitat - the place where they live - is disappearing. More land is used for farms, for
houses and industry, there are fewer open spaces than there once were. Farmers use powerful chemicals to help them grow better
crops, but these chemicals pollute the environment and harm the wildlife. The most successful animals on earth - human beings -
will soon be the only ones left, unless we can solve this problem.

Rock Band
Two years ago, our 14-year-old son, Ben asked us for a set of drums for his birthday. At first, we were very much against the idea
because of the noise. “It’s better than watching television or playing computer games in my free time”. Ben argued, “and it’ll keep
me out of trouble”. In the end we gave in. “All right”, we said, “but you must consider the rest of the family and the neighbors when
you play”. That was just the beginning. Because drums are not the easiest instruments to transport, the other members of Ben’s band
started appearing at our home with their guitars and other electrical equipment. And so, for several hours a week, the house shakes
to the noise of their instruments and their teenage singing.
At least Ben’s hobby has been good for our health: whenever the band start practicing, my husband and I go out for a long walk.
And I must admit that, although their music may sound a little strange, they are a friendly and polite group of young men. I cannot
judge their musical skill - after all I didn’t expect my parents’ generation to like the same music as I did when I was a teenager - but
they do play regularly in local clubs for young people.
Our main worry is that they won’t spend enough time on their school work because of their musical activities, though this hasn’t
happened yet. I am always stressing to Ben how important his studies are. But one thing is certain - Ben was right: it has kept him
out of trouble and he is never bored.

Food is one of the first things we notice about a different culture. It is also one of the first aspects of a different culture we feel free
to adopt. The table manners that accompany the food are not so obvious. When the behaviours of a culture are invisible, when we
are not even aware we have them, they are most powerful. What are some of the different table manners we might encounter at a
class dinner when a range of cultures is represented?
In Australia, it is expected that everyone will talk during a meal. The talking passes from one person to another and is often about an
issue that has been in the news, a new movie or some others neutral and safe topic. C./ In many Eastern cultures it is considered
impolite to speak while the meal is in progress. Conversation is held before or after the meal itself.
A/.After the meal, the way we place our eating tools, our knives, forks, spoons or chopsticks, is also culturally. In Australia,
when we have finished eating the main course we put the knife and fork across the middle of the plate parallel to each other with the
handles facing towards us. When we are resting during the meal, we put the knife and fork across each other on the middle of the
plate. G./In China, the chopsticks go crossways across the top of the plate with the handles facing towards the right as that is
the hand that holds the chopsticks. In Indonesia, some students tell me, the fork and spoon are crossed as in the Australian resting
position. But not all Indonesians may do this. Indonesia is itself a very multicultural society, so there may be a number of different
customs for this within the country.
Consider further where the dishes are positioned on the table. The Chinese custom of all the diners eating from a range of central
dishes is different from the Western way of having servings on separate plates. B /This expresses a different relationship between
people and shows lines of community in contrast to the Westerner’s separate plates. Even the way the knives and forks fence
in the plates makes a little frame for the plate and defines separate arenas of action all around the table, rather than one common
arena of action as is the case of cultures where all the diners share from the common dishes in the middle.

Illiteracy is the condition of being unable to read and write. Illiteracy is also used to describe the condition of being ignorant or
unknowledgeable in a particular subject or field. Computer illiteracy is the inability to use a computer programming language.
Most of us who use computers know how to send emails, or how to create a new folder. But we know little about programming
languages, the artificial languages used to write instructions that can be executed by a computer. Even in developed countries, a
very small percentage of computer users are able to read or write this kind of computer language. Should we make the effort to
learn a computer language, especially when these are so complicated? The answer is “Yes”. Because of computer illiteracy, users
depend on software manufacturers. Our society becomes more dependent on information technology, and in a few years’ time,
reading and writing a computer language will be as essential as using a human language. Computer users will not be able to survive
unless they know the code - the set of detailed instructions that tell a computer what to do. In the future, survival and professional
success will presuppose knowing everything about the machines we work with.
