Narrative Report on Participation in the 5-Day Seminar: Division Roll-out of HOTS-

PLPs for Grade 7 and Grade 8 Teachers in Science, Mathematics, and English

In compliance with DepEd Quezon Memorandum No. 446 s. 2024, I had the opportunity to attend
the "Division Roll-out of Higher Order Thinking Skills-Performance Learning Packages (HOTS-PLPs)"
seminar held for Grade 7 and Grade 8 teachers last July 22-26, 2024 at M.I. Sevilla Resort, Lucena City.
This 5-day seminar, conducted for educators in Science, Mathematics, and English, aimed to enhance our
understanding and application of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the classroom. The following is
an account of the seminar, detailing the daily topics, activities, and speakers.

The seminar began with the arrival and registration of participants, followed by an opening program
led by the Program Management Team. After a brief introduction, we were administered a pretest to assess
our baseline knowledge of HOTS and Performance Learning Packages (PLPs). Sir Jason Parentela, Master
Teacher from Quezon National High School, then facilitated a comprehensive walkthrough of the HOTS-
PLP resources, providing an overview of the materials we would use during the seminar. This session laid
the groundwork for what we would explore in the days ahead.

The second day began with a short opening program, followed by a clearing house session conducted
by Sir Jason Parentela. During this, we clarified our objectives for the day and revisited the pretest results.
Mam Lea L. Lopez, School Principal, then led a detailed discussion on the first two sessions, covering the
SOLO Taxonomy and how Higher Order Thinking Skills can be integrated into the classroom. In the
afternoon, Sir Jason Parentela returned to discuss session 3, which focused on practical strategies for
fostering HOTS in classroom activities. This session deepened our understanding of creating learning
experiences that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.

On the third day, participants opened with a program organized by one of the assigned groups,
followed by the clearing house led by Sir Jason Parentela. We then engaged with Worksheet 3, which was
designed to reinforce the concepts of HOTS. In the afternoon, Sir Bryan Ruedas, another Master Teacher,
facilitated Session 4 on "HOTS in Practice." His session emphasized real-world classroom application,
allowing us to see how the theoretical concepts of HOTS could be translated into daily lessons. This was
followed by a closing program for the day.

The fourth day began similarly with an opening program led by an assigned group, followed by the
clearing house led by Sir Bryan Ruedas. We worked on Worksheet 4, which further solidified our
knowledge of HOTS strategies. In the afternoon, Sir Jason Parentela facilitated Session 5, which focused on
developing a "Work Application Plan." This session allowed us to outline specific ways we could implement
HOTS-PLP strategies in our own teaching. Additionally, Sir Bryan Ruedas introduced the Force Field
Analysis, a tool that helps identify forces that support or hinder the successful implementation of HOTS in
the classroom. The day ended with a summative assessment administered by the Program Management
Team.

The final day began with the usual opening program, followed by a clearing house session led by Sir
Bryan Ruedas. We completed Worksheet 5, which was designed to wrap up our learning from the previous
sessions. In the afternoon, Mam Lea L. Lopez facilitated Session 6 on "Professional Learning Community"
(PLC). This session underscored the importance of collaboration among educators to continuously improve

teaching practices and share successful strategies. The seminar concluded with a closing program, where we
received feedback on our assessments and reflections on the knowledge gained throughout the seminar.

The "Division Roll-out of HOTS-PLPs" seminar was an invaluable experience. Each session
provided a deeper understanding of how to integrate higher-order thinking skills into lesson plans,
assessments, and classroom practices. The facilitators, especially Sir Jason Parentela, Mam Lea L. Lopez,
and Sir Bryan Ruedas, were highly knowledgeable and engaging, making the learning experience interactive
and insightful. The seminar not only equipped us with tools to enhance student engagement but also fostered
a collaborative spirit among fellow educators. I look forward to applying these strategies in my classroom to
promote critical thinking and a deeper understanding of academic content.
