EXPERIENCE
Please describe the extent of your experience in relation to the role for which you are applying and indicate how
this will help you in your application:
I have worked in education for approximately 20years. My first role was as a teacher in an overseas government
education programme in Thailand. On return to the UK in 2001 I took a long-term role as a supply teacher with
West Derby Boys Secondary School. I was based in the Maths and Science department where I taught GCSE
Maths at Key Stage 3 and 4, and Physics at Key Stage 4. Furthermore, I also taught Design Technology, CAD
and CAM at Key Stage 4. Transferring to teach in Knowsley Borough Council, in Newstead, a Pupil Referral
Unit, I was the Science Coordinator for Key Stages 3 and 4 and shared in good practice sessions across the
borough with the Heads of Science Community. I also supported the centre to achieve the best attainment on
record, supporting students in BTec Applied Science Curriculum. During this period, I decided to go to night
school and study HNC Engineering. I went on to remain in Newstead for 3 years while obtaining my HNC. But
following that I decided to take a role as an Engineering Manager in the Port of Liverpool, Produce Terminal. My
children were young at this time and I wanted a break from working in education. The role was very varied and
involved supervisory and active participation in the operation and maintenance of company assets in the cold
storage and packaging plant. MAC Group had contracts to supply fruit to all major supermarkets, and the
Northern operation was set up and ran for over 1 year. However, due to austerity and changes in the company’s
operation, which was mainly focused in Felixstowe and Paddock Wood, Kent, the company then decided to
mothball the Northern site. As Engineering Manager, I was privy to company Management meetings and
decided that I would change my role to work with a local biofuel’s provider. The main focus of my HNC in
Operations Engineering had been related to plant and process engineering, and I was comfortable to make this
transition. I had also been involved with a company, Tradebe, Willacy Oil Services, during my HNC, as I had
been given a project by them to analyse the application of various tricanter centrifuges for regional operation in
oil processing from temporary storage, pontoons. Working with the CEO of MBP EU, David Magnusson and
Head of UK Operations, Joe Platt exposed me to many company processes and products. I was involved in the
strategic business analysis of various tank farms for storage and site processing of company products. I
completed market analysis and presented findings at business meetings with clients and industry partners. I also
prepared contracts for products and services and used the company ERP system to manage supply logistics.
During this period, and after winning the company several lucrative contracts, the CEO and UK Manager
encouraged me to continue with my Professional Development and undertake a master’s degree in petroleum
engineering at Salford University. Several of the companies’ products had the potential to go into the oil industry
as additives to Drilling Mud, and it was in the company’s interest to develop this high earning market potential.
During my time at Salford, and as a mature student, I was appointed as Student Coordinator. I worked closely
with the lecturers Mohammed Nagib, Ali Kadir and with Gasim Nasr. I helped set up several special interest
groups, such as the Drilling and Production Engineers Simulation Labs, and I worked on several projects for the
PhD Candidates. Some of which involved me using 3D CAD skills to help provide drawings and designs for
Spray Nozzles for CO2 Sequestration processes, or pressure vessels for oil sludge removal from production
tubing. I was also instrumental in setting up the Society of Petroleum Engineers Salford Chapter. With key
events seeing the University host guest industry speakers and several trip to the Royal Geological Society in
London.
After completing my Master’s Degree, and wanting to get further experience in the industry I took a project role
in China. I was a appointed as a University Lecturer, in the International School, where I prepared students for
STEM Degree programmes in the UK. I also was attached to the Coal Mine Disaster Group – a key state lab and
supported the ongoing research into developing safe systems for gas production from Coal Bed Methane CBM
sites in the region. I also supported the International Student football Team as the Coach, running 3 training
sessions per week and supporting the Team during matchday, if there was no conflict with work priorities. During
my time at Chongqing University, I was also asked to assist in editing technical papers written by colleagues for
international publication. On completion of which several colleagues invited me to be on the review panel for
master’s Thesis students.
In 2014 I returned to the UK and went straight into employment as a Technical Writer and Trainer for the
Newcaflex Project. Newcaflex was the development of a $50 million site for production of subsea pipeline for the
oil and gas industry. During my time on this project, I worked closely with the design and commissioning teams
from all disciplines. I was attached to the Instrumentation and Control Team in Brasil during factory testing of the
equipment. In Newcastle, I was placed in the Industrialisation Team at Technip, to work with the electrical,
control and mechanical maintenance engineers, to ensure operations and maintenance procedures were
validated. I worked with equipment providers during commissioning and supported 3 rd party vendor training by
providing teams with Pre-Vendor and Post-Vendor training to ensure equipment strategies were in place.
Towards the end of the Project in 2014 Technip offered me a position to work at the plant at a Lead Trainer, and
the equipment provider Brastec also encouraged me to join them on a further project in Texas. However I had
already secured a position with Petrofac Training Services on the ExxonMobil West Qurna 1 Project in Iraq. My
motivation to work in Iraq was quite high. The work was well paid, and I had written technical papers about the
pipeline infrastructure in the country during my MSc and had studied with several Iraqis on the programme who
had become friends.
