Theme Electrochemistry
Title Investigating the effect of time on the electroplating process
Objective 1. to determine the effect of time on the electroplating
process
2. To use electroplating to plate copper metal onto a key.
Theory/ Electroplating is the process of coating an electrically conducting
Background surface with a thin layer of metal by using electrolytic deposition.

This technique is used in many fields, to increase the value or

the quality of a surface.

A familiar example of this process is the experiment will perform

in which a key is plated with copper. The key (called the cathode)
is connected to the negative terminal of a battery and is placed in
an electrolyte bath containing copper ions. The positive terminal
of the battery is connected to a piece of copper (called the
anode--and often just a copper plate), which is placed in the
electrolyte solution. The copper sheet slowly oxidizes, making
copper ions that are then attracted to the key, regaining their lost
electrons and becoming copper metal again, but now in the form
of a thin coating on the key. The battery forces all of this to
happen. A copper-plated key will be prepared using the

electroplating technique. In the preparation of the copper-plated

key, positive Cu2+ ions from the electrolyte bath will become
attracted to a key carrying a negative charge. When the Cu2+ ions
reach the key they will gain electrons and become reduced
(cathode) to form solid copper on its surface: Cu2+ (aq) + 2e- →
Cu(s) The copper (II) ions removed from the bath must be
replenished; this is accomplished at the anode where a solid
copper strip undergoes oxidation (anode):
Cu(s) → Cu2+ (aq) + 2e-

The hypothesis : The relation between the time and the mass of
copper coated should be a direct proportion.

Apparatus 500ml beaker, stopwatch, battery or power source (9-12 V) DC,

electronic balance, wires, a key or a steel spoon (cathode), a
copper strip (anode), a rod.

Precautions: The key and strip should be waited in the HCl

solution for 1 minute, and then wiped.
Are the proposed apparatus available? Yes / No

Chemicals Solid Cu(NO3)2, distilled water, 1M HCl solution, acetone.

Are the proposed chemicals available? Yes / No

Procedure
Procedure:

1. The key/spoon must be cleaned prior to electroplating.

Prepare by polishing with some sand paper. Wash in
distilled water, rinse and dry. Record its mass as in Table
1.
2. prepare a electrolyte Cu(NO3)2 solution (150ml of distilled
water and weight 15g of Cu(NO3)2 solid) into a beaker. stir
until completely dissolve.
3. Fill the beaker with Cu(NO3)2 solution then place the key
into the beaker.
4. Set the apparatus shown in Figure 1. Be sure that the
strip and the key do not touch each other.
5. Connect the key/spoon to the negative end of the power
supply and the strip to the positive end of the supply.
6. Turn on the power supply and start the stopwatch
spontaneously. Run the experiment for 5 minutes with a
current of 2.30 Amp.
7. Disconnect the wires and take the key/spoon out of the
solution.
8. Rinse the key/spoon with acetone and air dry it for a few
minutes.
9. Remass the key/spoon.
10. Repeat the experiment for 1, 10 and 20 minute intervals.
Be sure that the height of the copper strip is the same for
every trial.
11. plot a graph based on data observe

Expected Create a table displaying the data to be collected.
