Bonifacio Day
Bonifacio Day
Bonifacio Day
One from plenty of Andres Bonifacio's wise words on his fight for Philippine Independence. A
line from his ablaze heart that screamed freedom and nationalism which we can reflect on as we
commemorate Bonifacio Day, the birthday of one of the Philippines' greatest heroes.
Born on November 30 1896 in Manila, Philippines, He lived his life in poverty after his parents
died. He did not finish his formal education and worked instead as a broker to warehouse keeper
in order to support his five younger siblings and yet was able to educate himself through reading.
Despite being unfortunate, he together with other members was able to reorganize the 'La Liga
Filipina', a secret organization he joined founded by Dr. Jose Rizal, and named it "Katipunan", a
revolutionary society that instigate a revolt against Spanish colonizers and later on became the
movement's "Supreme" Leader.
However, he lost the power of the presidency to Aguinaldo at a convention held in Cavite on
March 22, 1897. He lost all the positions due to discrimination which says Bonifacio possessed
not have enough credentials to be elected. While Aguinaldo and his force won control over some
towns, Bonifacio tried to rein him in. which triggered his arrest. He was charged with Treason
and sedition and was executed on May 10, 1897. He was taken out of his cell in Maragondon and
marched to the mountains where he was shot in an unknown place. His body has never been
found.
Andres Bonifacio is regarded as one of the Philippine National Heroes to be commemorated on
his very birthday because he was executed not at the hands of foreign colonizers but by his
fellow countrymen.
The Supremo may have had a tragic end at the very hands of his own countrymen, but it was his
life and existence, his forming of the Katipunan which had greatly influenced the struggle for
Philippine independence.
