FINAL EXAM IN ENGLISH 410

NAME:NAROLD B. CASTELLANO
TEACHER: TONI GAY Z. ARTATES

1. What is your stand, which is more important language

proficiency or language fluency (site citation).

Various language acquisition theories, such as the Common European

Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), emphasize the
significance of language proficiency. These theories posit that
achieving proficiency involves a comprehensive understanding and
mastery of language skills, including listening, speaking, reading,
and writing. Language proficiency is often seen as a measure of a
person's ability to use a language effectively and accurately in
diverse situations. It encompasses not only fluency but also a
depth of understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and cultural
nuances. The emphasis on proficiency in these theories aligns with
the idea that a well-rounded and precise command of a language is
essential for successful communication and competence in real-life
scenarios. In certain situations, proficiency may be considered more
crucial than fluency. Proficiency emphasizes a solid command of
grammar, vocabulary, and language rules, promoting accuracy in
communication. This is particularly important in academic and
professional settings where clear and correct expression is
essential. Proficiency is often associated with a higher level of
formality, making it valuable in situations that require adherence
to standard language conventions, such as official documents,
reports, or academic writing. Some academic programs or jobs may
prioritize language proficiency as a specific requirement,
particularly when precise language skills are necessary for the
task at hand.I believe that proficiency ensures a strong foundation
in the language by providing a basis for further development and
adaptation to various communication contexts.

2.Who are the best teachers of the English language? Native

speakers of the English language or non-native speakers of the
English language?

The effectiveness of a teacher often depends on various factors

such as teaching skills, training, cultural awareness, and
understanding of language learning processes.Research by Vivian
Cook, a prominent applied linguist, suggests that the distinction
between native and non-native speakers as language teachers may be
less critical than factors like teaching competence and empathy
toward language learners. It's important to note that the field of
language education acknowledges the value of both native and non-
native English-speaking teachers, each bringing unique strengths to
the classroom. Many language teaching programs emphasize a
combination of language proficiency, teaching skills, and cultural
awareness, regardless of the teacher's native language.

3.Who owns the English language?(present - it is everybody who

can use language).

The English language belongs to the people who use it, communicate
in it, and contribute to its ongoing development. English has
become a lingua franca, spoken and understood by people around the
world for various purposes, including business, science, education,
and diplomacy. No single entity or authority can claim ownership of
the English language. Its richness and adaptability come from the
diverse contributions of countless individuals and communities
across time and geography. In the present, English is a shared
resource that continues to evolve through the collective use and
creativity of its speakers.
4. English language is a measurement of one’s intelligence, yes,
why or no why?

The idea that English language proficiency, is not necessarily a

direct measure of intelligence is supported by various theories in
psychology and linguistics. Based on the Multiple Intelligences
Theory (Howard Gardner)suggests that intelligence is not a single,
fixed entity but rather a combination of various types of
intelligences, such as linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial,
musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligences.
Proficiency in a specific language may align more with linguistic
intelligence, but it does not encompass all aspects of
intelligence.

5. Are all answers of the given issues to be considered correct?

(Past -yes, now - all opinions are just opinions unless you are
bases for your opinion).

I certainly believe that not all answers in a given issues are

correct. In the past, there might have been instances where certain
answers were considered correct based on prevailing beliefs,
ideologies, or limited information. However, in the present, the
understanding of correctness often involves a more nuanced
perspective. Nowadays, the recognition that correctness can be
subjective and context-dependent is more prevalent. In many fields,
including philosophy, science, and cultural discourse, there is an
acknowledgment that perspectives can differ, and what is considered
"correct" may be influenced by factors such as cultural context,
individual experiences, and evolving knowledge.

6. What are the minimum requirements for all English Teachers and
English students?

The minimum requirements for English teachers and students can vary
depending on the educational institution, specific program, or
country. For English teachers, they expected to have a high level of
proficiency in English, both in spoken and written forms.Teaching
skill- effective

communication, classroom management, and the ability to tailor

lessons to the needs of diverse learners are essential.Cultural
Competence- awareness and understanding of cultural nuances are
important, especially for teachers working with students from
different cultural backgrounds. For English Students, one is the
interest and motivation.Students should have a genuine interest in
learning English and the motivation to improve their language
skills.Next is basic language skills.Depending on the level of the
course, students may be expected to have a basic understanding of
English grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills.Access to
Learning Resources is another requirement.Students should have
access to relevant learning resources, which may include textbooks,
online materials, and language-learning tools. The last is
participation and engagement.Active participation in class
activities, discussions, and a willingness to practice and apply
language skills are important for student success.

7. Should grammar be taught? Yes or no? Why?

Yes it should be taught. Teaching grammar is essential for

effective Communication. It provides the structure and rules that
govern a language. Understanding grammar helps individuals
construct clear and coherent sentences, facilitating effective
communication. Grammar usage enhances clarity in writing and
speaking. It ensures that ideas are conveyed accurately and that
the intended meaning is not lost or misunderstood. In academic and
professional settings, correct grammar is often expected. Good
grammar skills contribute to the production of well-written
reports, essays, emails, and other forms of communication,
positively impacting success in various fields. Learning grammar is
a fundamental component of language proficiency. It enables
individuals to navigate the complexities of a language, including
sentence structure, verb tenses, and punctuation.Understanding
grammar enhances reading comprehension and writing skills. It
allows individuals to analyze and appreciate written texts and
empowers them to express themselves more effectively in writing. It
provides a set of standardized rules that contribute to a common
understanding of a language. This standardization helps maintain
consistency and clarity in communication within a linguistic
community. While language can be fluid and dynamic, teaching grammar
serves as a foundation for effective communication, fostering
linguistic precision and contributing to proficiency in both spoken
and written forms.
