Extension Activities
Read the story together with your child. Use the
discussion questions before, during, and after your
reading to deepen your child’s understanding of the
story and the rime (word family) that is introduced.
The activities provide fun ideas for continuing the
conversation about the story and the vocabulary
that is introduced. They will help your child make
personal connections to the story and use the
vocabulary to describe prior experiences.
Discussion Questions
• The boy in the story wins a race. What other
things can people win?
• Would you like to hear a crowd cheering, or
making a din for you? Why or why not?
• How do you think the boy in the story feels
after winning the race? How do you know?
Activities at Home
• Work with your child to draw a large winning
pin (ribbon), similar to the one pictured in the
story. Have your child write all the -in words
from the story on the pin.
• Have your child think about a familiar
setting, either at home or somewhere in the
neighborhood (a park, the library, etc.). Work
together to use the sight words from the story
and complete the following sentence frames:
“I see_____.” “I hear_____.” “I get_____.” and “I
can_____.”
