FINAL REPORT

November 2018
THE CONFERENCE HISTORY
The first edition of the International Conference on Agriculture in an Urbanized Society
was held in April 2012 at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. The theme was
Multifunctional Agriculture and Urban-Rural Relations, in which 253 participants from
different countries attended the meeting and 19 working groups. The event aimed to bring
together experts, academics, managers and organizations involved in agrifood issues
interested in discussing new food production, distribution and consumption strategies for
the 21st century.

In 2015, the second Conference was held at Roma Tre University, with the central
theme: Reconnecting Agriculture and Food Chains to Societal Needs. The edition received
370 participants and had 24 thematic groups. During the Conference, the 4th edition of
the “Social Innovations for Future Agriculture” award promoted by Icare recognized social
innovations through agriculture and revolutionary best practices. This edition consolidated
the international character of the event, encouraging the realization in other continents.
THE III EDITION
Brazil was chosen to host the III edition on September 2015. The theme of the 3ª edition is
“Healthy food, socio-biodiversity, and sustainable agrifood systems: innovations
from consumption to production.”

The III edition has implemented some changes in the focus and organizational process of the
Conference. Four aspects must be highlighted:

1. Conference Focus: In this edition, the name of the Conference changed to include “Food” due to its
relevance in contemporary societies and in recognition of the need to address production and
consumption in a integrated and dynamic way.

2. Gender Balance: the composition of the International Scientific Committee has changed to embrace a
higher number of women representatives and the design of all activities has considered gender balance
as a key element in selection of speakers.

3. Multilevel Governance: In addition to the International Scientific Committee, a National Scientific

Committee was included composed of 35 institutions active in different sectors of society such as
academia, government agencies, companies and social movements. Both Committee had a key role in
the definition of thematic, activities and in the consolidation of alliances. Locally, the Conference was
conducted by a multidisciplinary Commission composed of 20 UFRGS departments linked to the
agrifood fields. The AgUrb implementation was carried by an Executive Team, which currently gathers
professors, technicians, and graduate students.

4. Mobilization process: Since 2016, a series of preparatory activities have been carried out in different
cities in Brazil with the objective of mobilizing researchers, teachers, students and the community, in
general, to participate in the III AgUrb. These activities also contribute to foster new local alliances in
research and projects implementation towards sustainable food systems.
