Identify mental health problems which have negatively impacted on the learning progress of students in your
faculty and suggest solutions

Mental health problems are difficult experiences that makes it harder for us to get on with our lives. As
university students, there has been an increase in mental health problems over the years and certainly action
has to be put in place. Numerous studies have found common disorders such as depression, substance abuse,
attention deficit disorders, emotional abuse, unwanted sexual encounter, academic performance stress,
relationships, financial sleeping disorders (Liu et …,2019, Reddy et al 2015, South et 2017).

Depression has been one of the most popular mental health problem faced by university students. According
to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA,2021), depression is a mood
illness that is characterised by the presence of a sad, empty, or irritable mood, accompanied by somatic and
cognitive changes that significantly affect the individual’s capacity to function. In an Accounting based
environment, it totally means a student has to be focused because they will be dealing with numbers and a
simple mistake caused by sadness might lead to a whole lot of wrong answers. This negatively impacts the
results of an individual and demotivate them when they are not getting good grades. Depression also causes
students to not attend lectures, they spend their time in closed rooms because they feel sad and probably
thinks that the only way to get away from this depression is by isolating oneself.

However, awareness at University can be a positive solution to the problem of mental health. Introductory of
Yoga, sports and some empowerment programs can be an alternative to make students happy. Primarily, it is
said that happiness adds and multiples as we divide it others, hence the need to always be together in clubs
sharing ideas and even helping each other assignments as this makes one’s mind to relax and to take it easy
on life and focus on what is on the ground. This definitely will make students to function more and bring out
more innovative and effective ideas that will be able to promote the Education 5.0 criteria for students.

Financial stress is a significant concern for many students at the University of Zimbabwe, particularly those
from low-income backgrounds or facing economic hardships. Research by Chimbari and Ndetei (2019)
emphasized the impact of financial stress on students' mental health and academic performance, with
financial difficulties contributing to heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among university
students. Financial stressors, such as tuition fees, accommodation costs, and lack of access to basic
necessities, have created a significant barrier to learning and academic success to students in the faculty.
Furthermore, students at the University of Zimbabwe's Business Management Sciences and Economics
Faculty face common stressors such as high academic expectations, competitive environments, and
academic workloads. Mukwembi et al. (2020) found that academic pressure is a key source of stress and
anxiety among Zimbabwean university students, leading to burnout, tiredness, and psychological suffering.
Unrealistic academic standards, tight deadlines, and fear of failure worsen students' mental health issues and
impair their learning progress.

Suicide attempts in university is associated with mental health problems (Bryan , 2021,Lipson et al 2022,
Gratz et al ,2024 and Puffy et al 2020.Student suicide is defined as those who die by suicide or any event
that of undetermined intect before or on the end date of their studies (Levi – Belz et al .., 2019) .Findings
from recent research have shown that the most youth suicides are the results of an interaction between
biological , sociocultural , previously failed attempts , family factors. For example, as a systems developer
student in Accounting who has a broken family, a family that does not check-up her regularly at
University. This eventually makes them feel unwanted and so demotivated to do anything to develop
themselves in their studies and be able to shine in their studies because in their mind it feels like there is no
one to support me emotionally hence they might think they do not have any reason to concentrate on their
studies. This is causing students to lose their innovative side and eventually commit suicide.

It is important for students to participate in programs such as Social and Emotional learning SEL programs
or youth development interventions (Benoit et al…, 2021). Parents involvement in everything to support
their children will also create an environment that motivates them to never give up on their studies and to
further this according to (Brook, 2018) parental participation variables including parental warmth, parental
support, parental encouragement are linked better to adolescent health outcomes. Parents should create time
for the children even at university level.

In conclusion, resolving mental health issues that impede students' academic achievement in the University
of Zimbabwe's Business Management Sciences and Economics Faculty calls for a coordinated effort by
academic staff, students, and external stakeholders. It requires a lot of support even from parents, their
involvement is as good as that of the institution and together we can fight all these mental health problems.
