English Bingo Mechanics and Rules

Objective
The objective of English Bingo is to complete a predetermined pattern on a bingo
card by marking off words that are called out by the caller. The first player to complete
the pattern and call out “Bingo!” wins the game.

Setup
1. Bingo Cards
 Prepare bingo cards with a 5x5 grid.
 Fill each square with different English words (related to vocabulary,
themes, or topics relevant to your ESL students)
 Ensure no two cards are the same.
2. Caller’s Word List
 Prepare a list of all the words used on the bingo cards.
 These words will be called out randomly during the game.
3. Markers
 Provide each player with markers (eg., coins, chips, or small pieces of
paper) to cover the words on their cards.
4. Caller
 Assign one person to be the caller who will announce the words.

How to Play
1. Distribute Cards
 Give each player one bingo card and a set of markers.
2. Explain the Pattern
 Announce the winning pattern for the game (eg. Straight line, full house,
four corners)
3. Start the Game
 The caller randomly selects a word from the caller’s word list and
announces it to the players.
 Players look for the announced word on their bingo cards and cover it with
a marker if they have it.
4. Continue Playing
 The caller continues to announce words one at a time.
 Players continue to mark their cards as words are called.
5. Winning the Game
 The first player to complete the winning pattern on their card shouts
“Bingo!”
 The caller verifies the marked words against the called words to confirm
the win.
 If the pattern is correct, the player wins the game. If not, the game
continues.
Rules
1. Card Setup
 Each player must have a uniwue bingo card.
 No altering or changing cards once the game has started.
2. Marking Cards
 Players can only mark off words that have been called by the caller.
 Players must use the provided markers to cover the words.
3. Calling Bingo
 Players must shout “Bingo!” loud enough for the caller to hear.
 Once “Bingo!” is called, the game pauses, and the caller checks the card.
4. Verification
 The caller checks the player’s card to ensure all marked words have been
called.
 If the player’s card is verified and correct, they win the game.
 If the player’s card is incorrect, the game resumes, and the player is not
allowed to call “Bingo!” again for that round.
5. Multiple Winners
 If more than one player calls “Bingo!” simultaneously, multiple winners
can be declared, or a tiebreaker round can be played.
