CLASS - 10
Dear Parents,
Summer Vacations are the most awaited time of the year for students. It
gives them a break from the monotonous daily routine and gives them the
opportunity to try new and interesting things that they didn’t get time for.
Parents are the first and the most important teacher for a child and summer
vacations are the time when we can encourage our child to practice many
educational/fun activities at home and promote his/her learning skills.
Working together will not only help your child to build, learn and develop
his/her abilities but also strengthen your bond with him/her. Summer
vacations can be considered spent well only if kids are able to strike a
balance between enjoyment and learning.
Students should consider summer vacation not just as a fun time, but also a
great opportunity to make the best out of their time.
General Instructions for students: -
✓ Wake up early and develop a morning routine.
✓ Do yoga, meditation or just a brisk walk.
✓ Don’t play in the sunshine.
✓ Do all work under the guidance of your parents and guardians.
✓ Help out your parents in family chores, and learn some useful skills
that way.
✓ Start learning a new skill like painting, dance, music or public
speaking etc.
✓ Learn are prepare yourself for July Periodic Assessments.
✓ Play games, sports and do a lot of physical activity, but only during
the morning/evening hours.
✓ Read more. Challenge yourself to finish reading at least a couple of
good story books during the vacation.
✓ Make sure to be consistent with the holidays’ homework. Avoid
completing it for the last day!
✓ Do not waste all your time to play video games and/or mobile
games.
✓ Don’t go out during the hours of peak sunshine. Try some
interesting indoor activities.
✓ Do not oversleep, and do not let laziness take you over. Stay active
during the vacations.
✓ Take good care of your health and hygiene.
✓ Eat good food, drink plenty of water, and have lots of fun!
Instructions for Parents: -
✓ Make your ward read resource/story books.
✓ Make your ward learn and remember his/her parents mobile
/landline number, house address etc. to make him/her
independent and secure.
✓ Fix up a time table for your ward to organize his/her daily
routine like watching television, playing with friends, studying
etc.
✓ Make your child responsible by assigning some of the household
responsibilities to him/her like watering plants, arranging the
dining table, organizing his/her room and cupboards, fill the
empty water bottles and put them in refrigerator etc.
Above mentioned guidelines will help your child to become a smart
and an active learner.
SECTION – A (Reading)
1- Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Nanotechnology is the science of the miniature, the science that can create a mobile for an
ant! Nano- materials are a thousand times smaller than the diameter of a human hair and
can be applied to almost every field, from medicine to cosmetics. 'Nano' in Greek means
'dwarf' and when any material is reduced to a nano dimension, there are drastic changes in
its physical, chemical, magnetic, optical, mechanical and electrical properties. It is for this
reason that this cutting-edge technology can be used in aerospace, engineering, bioscience,
medical science, environment, electronics, security and a variety of other fields.
In the area of health, nanotechnology can create sensors in the form of biochips, to be
inserted in the human body, targeting a drug to a single malignant cell. It can also make
tiny medical devices and sensors with fantastic precision to reach areas where the surgeons'
hands cannot, and repair damaged and diseased tissues.
Nanotechnology can help scientists work on atoms at a finer level, helping us get more
advanced products. Nanobots may be made from carbon nanotubes to carry out functions
like human beings. Nanotechnology has the power to convert sunlight into power, providing
unlimited energy sources. Moreover, as nanomaterials are light, strong and transparent,
they can be used for a variety of products. Nano-coatings can be applied to different fabrics
to make them scratch-resistant and dirt repellent. It also has the potential to produce
garments which can block chemical and biological weapons from touching the skin of a
person.
In computing, nanoscience may lead to smaller or more powerful microchips with increased
capacity and dramatic reductions in the size of hard discs. In environmental science
nanotechnology is providing ways to detect and filter bacteria and toxins out of water
supplies and clear up heavy metal and organic chemical pollution. In military technology,
governments are splashing cash on developing new, light-weight equipment and weapons,
bullet-proof battle-suits that can morph to provide camouflage.
Despite the fact that it still has relatively few commercial applications, nanotechnology has
generated criticism from environmental groups and others who fear as-yet-unknown risks
to human health and the environment. Critics have called for a moratorium on research,
arguing that we know little about the toxicological effects of nanoparticles, and that there
are no regulations to control them.
Based on your understanding of the above passage, answer the questions given
below.
(a) Which of the following statements best sums up the author's purpose in using the
metaphor of an ant to describe what nanotechnology can do?
(i) He wishes to point out how pointless and wasteful technology can be.
(ii) He wants to debunk the tall claims made by nanotechnology proponents as
exaggerated.
(iii) He wants to emphasize the ultra micro level at which nanotechnology operates.
(iv) He wishes to show how much he knows about the latest in nanotechnology.
(b) Complete the sentence appropriately
We can say that nanotechnology is truly 'cutting-edge' because -------
(c) Complete the sentence appropriately.
The author's use of expressions like 'targeting a drug to a single malignant cell' and
'tiny medical devices and sensors with fantastic precision' in paragraph 2 greatly
affects the reader because-----
(d) Based on the reading of the passage, examine, in about 40 words, how nanotechnology
promises to revolutionize the textile and garment industry.
(e) The passage includes some words that are synonyms of each other. From the sets (i) to
(v) below, identify two sets of synonyms.
(i) dwarf and tiny
(ii) morph and create
(iii) drastic and dramatic
(iv) resistant and repellent
(v) malignant and powerful
(f) List four distinct qualities of nanomaterials that make them excellent choice for
multiple applications.
(g) Is investing money in nanotechnology for military purposes justified? Say 'Yes' or 'No'
and justify your answer with a reason or two.
(h) List two steps that are needed, according to paragraph 5, to make nanotechnology
safer for human beings and the environment.
(i) What is the tone of the writer in the given line from paragraph 5? Rationalize your
response in about 40 words.
"Despite the fact that it still has relatively few commercial applications,
nanotechnology has generated criticis from environmental groups and others who fear
as-yet-unknown risks to human health and the environment."
(j) Substitute the word 'moratorium' with one word similar in meaning, in the following
sentence from paragraph 5.
"Critics have called for a moratorium on research...."
SECTION-B (WRITING)
