INTRODUCTION

Improvise Refrigerant Recovery Machine is a device used to remove refrigerant

from cooling systems such as freezers or air conditioning (AC) systems.

Technicians use this device before repairing or performing maintenance on air

conditioners, freezers, or refrigerators. The refrigerant is recovered into a tank for

subsequent recycling or reuse. This research study develops practical skills in

electrical connections, assembling, troubleshooting, maintenance, and safety

protocols which are valuable in automotive workshops and repair facilities.

Knowledge on refrigerant recovery machines align in the need to be aware of

regulations for usage, disposal, and harmful emissions.

According to Santosh Kumar (2015) Refrigerant recovery system is very

useful unit in Refrigeration and Air-conditioning field. It is used when a system that

leaks may be topped-up or repaired. Topping-up may have a lower immediate cost,

whereas repairing the leak takes more time and therefore costs more. However, in

the long-term, the repaired system is less likely to leak thus the costs cease,

whereas repeatedly topping-up a system over months and years results in a very

high accumulated cost. Obviously, preventing leakage and thus fewer journeys to

the equipment and better resulting efficiency is much more desirable from an

environmental perspective.

According to Daniel Dall'Onder (2002) since high GWP HFCs refrigerants are

being controlled due to the growing worldwide concern over climate change in the

HVAC&R area. Therefore, pure refrigerants (HFCs, HCs, and HFOs) and different
Marinduque State College 7
COLLEGE OF INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

types of blends with lower GWP than R-410A were evaluated to find the possible

alternative that can operate without any modifications in equipment that was

initially designed for R-410A, in otherwords, potential drop-in candidates. As stated

in the study of Daniel Dall'Onder (2002), the most important performance

parameters were compared based onexperimental data reported in the literature,

including cooling (or heating) capacity, energy efficiency, and compressor

discharge temperature. Furthermore, an assessment of the environmental impact

of these candidates using the TEWI andLCCP methodologies was performed.

Importantly, this study identified two HFO/HFC mixtures (DR-55 and DR-5A) as

potential candidates, both with high availability in the market. These

mixturespresented COP, cooling/heating capacity, and discharge temperature

similar to those observed in equipment operating with the baseline

refrigerant. Finally, these candidates also revealed the lowest TEWI and LCCP values,

thus indicating asignificant reduction in environmental impact. Considering the

performance parameters and the climate change impact parameters, these

mixtures are the most suitable candidates for residential air conditioners and heat

pumps.

Refrigerant recycling is environmentally important because it reduces the need

to produce more refrigerants. Processing facilities are also slowly removing and

disposing of harmful refrigerants like Freon by taking the refrigerant out of old

appliances. Proper disposal is critical for older refrigerants which have been linked

with damage to the Earth's atmosphere, and for modern refrigerants which are
Marinduque State College 8
COLLEGE OF INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

considered safe, recycling still saves money and reduces stress on the environment.

By building this improvised refrigerant recovery machine, it provides a

sustainable solution for refrigeration system, addressing environmental concerns,

regulatory compliance, and cost effectiveness. As some automotive course takers,

this task, finds directly to relating it in topics on HVAC systems and automotive air

conditioning.HVAC systems understand on providing heating,ventilation, and,air

conditioning in vehicles. It leads to enhance comprehension of the system’s

refrigeration cycle, components and principles applied in building this customized

recovery machine.

Refrigerant Recovery Machine Framework.

A refrigerant recovery machine is a device used to recover refrigerant from a

cooling or refrigeration system. The concept behind the machine is relatively simple:

it uses a compressor to draw the refrigerant out of the system, store it in a tank,

and then clean and filter it so that it can be reused.

The recovery process begins by ensuring that all hoses are properly connected.

Open the low pressue valve. Close the high pressure valve and securely seal the

refrigerant tan. Activate the pressure pump for a duration of 3 minutes. Once 3

minutes have passed, Close the low pressure valve. Proceed to turn off the

pressure pump. Open the refrigerant tan and the high pressure valve. If you observe

a white flow in the sight glass, it signifies the recovery process is complete. Wait

until the refrigerant recovery is finished before disconnecting any hoses. The
Marinduque State College 9
COLLEGE OF INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

recovered refrigerant can then be reused in the same system or in another system

that uses the same type of refrigerant. Alternatively, the recovered refrigerant can

be sent for recycling or disposal, depending on local regulations.

Overall, the refrigerant recovery machine is an essential tool for anyone working

with cooling or refrigeration systems, as it helps to ensure that refrigerant is

properly handled and reused or disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

METHODOLOGY

The research strategy and methodology that was employed to attain the

study's objectives are described in this part of the study. It describes the research tool,

the data gathering process, and the pertinent statistical data analysis.

Research Method and Design

The study design and construct an improvised refrigerant recovery machine

using an experimental approach. The researchers evaluate the improvised refrigerant

recovery machine performance through its efficiency and feasibility from different

sources.

The design process includes iterative modifications, where the prototypes

developed, tested and refined. At first it is that hard to develop the machine but through

multiple iterations it come up with good results. Prototyping includes, procurement of

the necessary components and materials, assemble the components to build a working

prototype, and ensure that the prototype meets safety standards and functional

requirement.

Boac Marinduque, where most of the laboratory activities carried out this location

served as suitable settings for monitoring and conducting the necessary experimental

procedures.

All the materials for our study such as Vacuum pump and Gauge manifold were

purchased at online shop(shopee). While the empty tank of refrigerant was purchase at

Mogpog merchandise market. Then the refrigerant was purchased at Boac merchandise

market. Furthermore, all the other materials needed in this research such us metal,

aircon cover served as the cover of the machine and other equipment needed were all

saved up from random things for our study.

Assemble and experimenting of our prototype were done at Tanza, Boac,

Marinduque. After we complete the materials, the first procedure, we tested if the

vacuum pump would work properly and find effective. And then we tried with refrigerant,

and it worked out failed due to handling ineefective connections. In the second

experiment, we weighed a refrigerant tank that was empty to determine whether its

weight would increase if we utilized our improvised prototype, again it’s a failure.

Then,on the third trial when we connect all the required pieces. Our test was successful.

As shown in the preceding table, the developed research prototype is rated from
4.17 to 4.48. It can be observed the lowest attribute was compatibility and
maintainability as the highest. All of the ratings are interpreted as very satisfactory. The
developed research prototype has an over-all rating of 4.33 and described as very
satisfactory in terms of functionality, performance efficicency, compatibility, usability,
reliability, and maintainability.

Based on these data, it implies that the developed research prototype may or not
be compatible with other devices. Improvements can be made to make the device more
compatible and interoperable with other machines or devices. However, maintainability
was rated the highest implying the developed research prototype is easier to maintain.

Reject Ho = There is no significant agreement among the evaluators

As shown in the preceding table, it can be observed that there a moderate to

substantial agreement among the evaluators based on the Kappa value ranging from
0.53 to 0.64. Further, this is supported by the computed p-values that are less than
0.05 thus rejecting the null hypothesis that there is no significant agreement among
the evaluators. The characteristics of the developed system and prototype were
moderate to substantially agreed upon.
