Objective of the Activity:


This assignment aims to familiarize students with Mintzberg’s managerial roles. It will help
students to apply their knowledge to real-world organizational scenarios.
The Premise:
“Education for All” is an International organization that provides free education to all
individuals regardless of age. They recently started operations in Pakistan, with Mr. Hashim
appointed Campus Head. He signed an agreement with a building owner to establish their first-
ever campus. Apart from fulfilling his daily legal obligations, he meets and greets all guests,
including parents, stakeholders, and the media.
He recently chaired a meeting of all the departments on the campus and emphasized making
every effort to make the campus one of the best in providing quality education. For this, he
generously allotted funds to the R&D department. He also directed the public relations
department to use their resources in building a positive image of the organization through
media, for which he allocated 1 million rupees.
After analyzing and having a thorough understanding of the case, you are required to:

Identify the interpersonal and decisional roles Mr. Hashim performed as the “Campus Head”.

Interpersonal Roles
1. Leader.

Question:
Justify your answers in light of the case with at least one argument for each role.
Solution:

1. Leader:
Mr. Hashim plays a leadership role as he builds the team, coach’s members, motivates
them and builds strong relationships. In this regard he presided over the meeting of all the departments of
the campus and emphasized to do everything possible to make the campus the best and he directed and
motivated the staff for training and related duties.

2. Figurehead:
Mr. Hashim has played the role of figurehead as Mr. Hashim was appointed as the
head of the campus and he entered into an agreement with the owner of the building to set up his first
campus. As the campus head in the figurehead role you had the social and legal responsibilities of signing
legal documents on behalf of the organization.

3. Liaison:
Mr. Hashim plays the role of liaison as he liaises between the organization and
outsiders and also maintains internal and external contacts for information.

4. Resource Allocator:
Mr. Hashim perform resource allocator role to make a decision wherever the
organization can expand its efforts and makes selections on the allocation of resources like capital fund,
time, material, and men etc. This involves allocating funding as well as distribution workers and different
organizational resources.

5. Entrepreneur:
Mr. Hashim perform entrepreneur role to initiates ad plans the controlled change in
the organization through exploiting opportunities or determination problem and taking action to
enhance existing operation.
