Section 1: Review (Approx. 100 words)
Since beginning this course, I have developed a wide range of skills and
improved/strengthened pre-existing ones. In my first project, Documentary, I
was Director and the Voice Over Artist. This first project gave me the
introduction to filmmaking. In my music video project, I was the director
again. I also acted inside the video. Unfortunately, this project was too
ambitious and didn't end up coming out as we wanted but this gave me a
chance to learn and improve for the future. In my current project, Short Film, I
have taken the role of sound recordist due to the fact of how important audio
is inside our thriller film to build suspense.
Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
In this project, I want to create a short thriller film. The concept is loosely
based around something a lot of people our age can relate to. This being
sneaking on our video games at night, trying not to wake your parents and
trying not to get caught. I want to take this commonly relatable misbehavior
and turn it into a horror/thriller theme to throw people off. For example, I have
watched the film Misery. Misery is known for having a story that originally
seems innocent at first but later the lovely nurse looking after the patient
turns out to be a psychopath serial killer. I plan to recreate this innocence to
ruin it. My project’s story is set inside our main character: Dim’s house. Dim
plays his video games long into the night whispering to his friends, so he
doesn’t wake his parents. Suddenly, his console loses battery. Still wanting
to play with his friends, he is persuaded to sneak downstairs to get his
Nintendo Switch so that he can keep playing. During the sneak downstairs,
Dim’s Mother can be seen stalking him. However, she is not human. She has
taken the form of a monster with a fleshy bloody face and inhumanly long
arms with long claws. I got inspiration for the monster's design from the Rec
monster: Tristana Medeiros. When Dim goes to where his switch is, it
appears behind him. Confused, Dim goes over to it but leads to a jump scare
as the monster appears behind him. I got inspiration from the horror film The
Poltergeist. I want to make our scary scenes like the ones in film. This leads
to a chase scene of Dim fleeing to his room for safety but is injured before he
can make it to safety. Although instead of killing Dim, the monster just takes
the switch and lumbers off as if that's all it wanted like a mother confiscating
it as a punishment. To make this concept a reality, I have researched ways to
build suspense and create jump scares via YouTube and watching similar
genre short films.
Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
To record my progress, reflect and evaluate on my work. I will be
documenting my work onto my online journal, Weebly. This journal will
include key research into content, market, production, evaluation and
inspiration. This helps to show my thought/development process over this
project and how I will improve my skills across the project's duration.
