Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Target

In this module, you are going to interpret and explain Grouping, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Subtraction (GEMDAS) rule (M6NS-IIf-148) and perform
two or more different operations on integers with or without exponent and grouping
symbols (M6NS-IIf-149).

After going through this module, you are expected to:

• Identify what operations in the GEMDAS are involved in the number
sentences.
• Recognize which operation to perform first in number sentences with 2 or
more operations.
• Find the order in which the operations have to be done.
• Evaluate expressions involving two or more different operations with or
without exponents and grouping symbols

Jumpstart

There were viral posts on social media challenging math enthusiasts to solve an
equation. Answers in the comment sections were different.
Try solving these together with your sibling.

10 + 5 x 4 ÷ 2 – 10 =

2² + 2 x 2 - (2 ÷ 2) =
What answers did you have? Are they the same?

Discover

In our given number sentence 10 + 5 x 4 – 10 ÷ 2 =, how many operations are

involved? What are these operations?

Right, we have four operations in our number sentence. We have addition,

multiplication, subtraction and division. There is a series of operation without
grouping symbols. With this, multiplication and division are performed first from left
to right, followed by addition and subtraction, whichever comes first from left to right.
Thus, to solve 10 + 5 x 4 -10 ÷ 2,
Multiplication comes first from left to right before division, so we multiply first:
10 + 5 x 4 – 10 ÷ 2
10 + 20 – 10 ÷ 2

Then, we divide:
10 + 20 – 10 ÷ 2
10 + 20 – 5
Now, between addition and subtraction, which comes first from left to right?
So next, we add:
10 + 20 – 5
30 – 5
And lastly, we subtract:
30 – 5 = 25

By following the MDAS rule, the answer to our number sentence is 25. Did you get
the same answer?

Let’s try the second number sentence: 2² + 2 x 2 - (2 ÷ 2)

3 LU_Q2_Mathematics6_Module6
Again, what operations are involved in it? Parenthesis, ( ) is a grouping symbol. A
series of operations may also involve grouping symbols and exponents. Follow these
rules in solving them:

Rule 1: Simplify the operations inside the grouping symbols first. Grouping symbols
are always done from the innermost set outward.
In our number sentence, 2² + 2 x 2 - (2 ÷ 2) the underlined part has
the grouping symbol so we perform its operation first.
Grouping: 2² + 2 x 2 - (2 ÷ 2)
2² + 2 x 2 - 1
Rule 2: Evaluate exponential expressions.
The exponential expression in our number sentence is 2². The bigger 2 is the base
and the small ² is the exponent. The exponent tells us the number of times a number
is multiplied by itself. So, 2² is also 2 x 2 which is equal to 4.
2² + 2 x 2 – 1
4 +2x2–1

Rule 3: Multiply and divide in the order they appear from left to right.
Multiplication: 4 + 2 x 2 – 1
4+ 4 –1
Rule 4: Add and subtract in the order they appear from left to right.
Addition: 4+4–1
Subtraction: 8–1
Answer: 7
This is the GEMDAS rule (Grouping symbols, Exponents, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, and Subtraction). So, if you encounter a number sentence with a series of
operations, always remember to use GEMDAS rule.
