Personal statement
Personal statement
Provide a personal statement which you can use as a starting point to your supporting information for specific applications.
I am applying for this post, because I believe my experience and knowledge fits the criteria.
I am a Rehabilitation Engineer with strong leadership and relationship-building skills. Dynamic, self motivated, flexible and hard working
person, who has excellent communication skills and particularly enjoy working with young people and adults with disability from different
cultures and backgrounds.
I have great respect for individuals as I love gaining respect in return. I do not discriminate individuals against on the basis of their race,
gender, nationality, marital status, sexual orientation, employment status, disability, age, religious belief or by any condition or requirement
which is not demonstrably justified but value any client for whom they are.
I am currently working with Posture and Mobility Services, covering Birmingham Wheelchair Service. My role as a Rehabilitation Engineer
is to provide technical and clinical input within the field of wheelchairs and seating systems. My responsibilities are assessing client needs,
prescribe equipment and handing over equipment. Also involve in monitoring the activities of wheelchair repair service (responding to
inquires), maintenance, and modification of wheelchair. Working in partnership with repair service auditing stock wheelchairs, and
inspection of reconditioning and
refurbishment of returned used wheelchairs for cost savings to the service.
As part of my role, if client's needs cannot be met with off the shelf equipment, it is my responsibility to make modification or design and
prescribe bespoke items. Also, involves assessing and prescribing special control systems to meet client's complex power wheelchair
needs; however, if client's needs are beyond my capability I refer clients to specialist service (posture and mobility service).
I also, participate in multi-disciplinary clinical assessment with therapist and subcontracted company representatives (e.g. Specialised
Orthotic Services (SOS) or Active Design) to assess and prescribe custom made seating systems. I have completed a 4 day training in
Posture Management for People with Complex Disability at Oxford Centre for Enablement to enhance my knowledge and experience
assessing client's complex postural needs.
It is also my responsibility in supervising and managing our wheelchair technician from day one since the start of the job on going (created
competency training plan to match job description, produced a day to day activity process to support clinicians and lead regular 1 to 1
meetings).
Moreover, I participates in service development projects. Assist senior colleagues and line manager in developing and empowering all
members of the team to perform high standards and achieve best practice in service.
The current job thought me how to manage my time effectively, complete tasks under pressure, improve my communication skills, assess
the needs of service users, and provide clear and accurate information.
With the support of my colleagues and line manager, I will endeavour to offer the best service to clients. I have good experience with
people in a customer oriented environment either face to face or none face to face and can therefore communicate professionally and
clearly in both written and spoken English. I understand that some clients might have learning difficulty or be non-English speakers and
therefore would need to communicate to them in a clear and simple language that they can understand and sometimes a need to use
communication aid or interpreters in order for the message being communicated to be well understood.
I believe that if anything is beyond my ability, I would always refer or report to my line manager way in time by updating them with my
progress. My work as a support worker previously and as clinician currently gave me the opportunity to acquire skills such as excellent
listening skills, problem solving and the ability to empathize as well as establishing boundaries to avoid emotional over involvement.
I am fully competent and comfortable using office software packages i.e. Word, Spreadsheet, Database, CATIA V5R13, SoftOption BEST,
Outlook and competent in using power wheelchair programmer software tools.
I have full and clean driving license. I am also registered with IPEM and RCT professional registration.
Finally, if granted the wonderful opportunity, I guaranty you that you are employing an honest, trustworthy and a hard working person.
