(QJLQHW\SH This Service Letter concerns the following WÄRTSILÄ engine types
equipped with the ABB TPL65 turbocharger:
- WÄRTSILÄ 16V26ST and 18V26X,
- WÄRTSILÄ 6L32 and 12V32,
- WÄRTSILÄ Vasa 16V32LN and 18V32LN,
- WÄRTSILÄ 18V32DF,
- WÄRTSILÄ 18V34SG and 20V34SG,
- WÄRTSILÄ 6L38
- 16VA32 (Grandi Motori Trieste).
*HQHUDO There have been experienced failures of the rotor in the ABB TPL65
turbocharger operating on the WÄRTSILÄ 6L32 engine in marine main
engine applications and on the WÄRTSILÄ Vasa 18V32LN in a power
plant application.
The reason for these failures has been confirmed to be high torsional
vibrations of the rotor.

Introduction
There have been failures with TPL65 turbochargers (TC) operating on
Wärtsilä engines W6L32 (marine) and on 18V32LN (stationary). The fail-
ures occurred at low running hours between 1000 and 3000 hrs. The dam-
age was similar in all cases. The shaft was found with cracks in the transition
area to the turbine wheel underneath the labyrinth sealing bush or even
completely broke off in this zone. In a few cases also the compressor wheel
broke or was found cracked in the area of the hub.
Investigation
Extensive investigations carried out in close co-operation with Wärtsilä lead
to the following result:
A high torsional vibration level and operation in torsional resonance of the
complete rotor was determined as main cause of the problem. In certain
installations the acting vibration stress is higher than the fatigue limits of the
rotor and short hour failures are possible.
Actions
ABB Turbo Systems Ltd has already launched the manufacturing of a differ-
ent shaft. A rotor with lower vibration response is under development.
Further, ABB has set up an overall assessment, which implies the inspection
of the rotor either pro-actively or during the first standard TC overhaul be-
tween 8000 and 12000 hrs. This could lead to an exchange of the shaft and,
case by case, of the compressor wheel as well.
All additional, i.e. extra labour, including replacement of components, caused
by such special or extra inspection, will be handled under ABB warranty,
provided that such extra labour was caused by the vibration described in this
Service News.
Finally, ABB will be prepared for service support in case of emergency by
building up local spare part stocks, including complete TPL65 units.

Recommendations
Installations with TC type TPL65, operated on the Wärtsilä engine types
mentioned above, shall be monitored. Further, it is recommended to adhere
to the following advises:
§ if TC problems should be noticed (e.g. sudden high vibrations, in-
creased noise, deviation in engine output) immediately contact your
nearest Wärtsilä or ABB service station;
§ do not postpone a standard overhaul/service (between 8000 and
12000 hrs);
§ do schedule a slightly extended down time for this 1st overhaul due to
possibly needed special inspections;
§ inform your local ABB and/or Wärtsilä service station about an over-
haul/service well in advance for optimal co-ordination.
Concluding Remark
This procedure has been generated in close co-operation and mutual un-
derstanding with Wärtsilä. In view of this special situation it remains ABBs
target to minimize any risk of failure and to ensure a reliable TC operation.
