Multiple choice Questions

1. A key of mechanical piano is first stuck gently and then stuck again but much harder
this time. What kind of change in sound will you observe in the second case?

A. sound will be louder and the pitch will also be higher.

B. Sound will be louder but the pitch will not be different.
C. Sound will be louder but the pitch will be lower.
D. Both loudness and pitch will remain unaffected.

2. Which technique uses sound or ultrasonic waves to measure distance under water?

A. RADAR B. SONAR
B. Echo sounding D. Sonography

3. In order to reduce the loudness of a sound, we have to

A. decrease its frequency of vibration of the sound.

B. increase its frequency of vibration of the sound.

C. decrease its amplitude of vibration of the sound.

D. increase its amplitude of vibration of the sound.

The questions below consist of an assertion and a reason. Use the following key to choose
the appropriate answer.

A. If both assertion and reason are correct and reason is correct explanation of the
assertion.
B. If both assertion and reason are correct, but the reason is not the correct
explanation of the assertion.
C. If the assertion is correct, but the reason is incorrect.
D. If the assertion is incorrect, but the reason is correct.

4. Assertion: An object moving at a speed greater than the speed of the sound is said to be
moving at Supersonic speed.
Reason: Sound travels faster in solids and liquids than in air.

5. Assertion: Echo is the repetition of sound due to reflection of original sound by a large and
hard obstacle.
Reason: To hear a distant echo, the time interval between the original sound and the
reflected one must be at least 0.1 second.

6. Assertion: A wave is a disturbance that moves through a medium when the particles of the
medium set neighbouring particles in motion.
Reason: A particle of the medium in contact with the vibrating object is first displaced from
its equilibrium position and produces a wave.

7. Assertion: Pitch of a note depends upon its wavelength.

Reason: Sound cannot travel through vacuum.

area. She hears sound 5 seconds after she observed lightning. How far is she from the
place where lightning occurs?

Case study based questions

A violin and a flute may both be played the same time in an orchestra. Both sounds
travel through the same medium, that is, air and arrive at our ear at the same time.
Both sounds travel at the same speed irrespective of the source. But the sounds we
receive are different. This is due to the different characteristics associated with the
sound. Pitch is one of the characteristics. How the brain interprets the frequency of
an emitted sound is called its pitch. The faster the vibration of the source, the higher
is the frequency and the higher is the pitch. The magnitude of the maximum
disturbance in the medium on either side of the mean value is called the amplitude
of the wave. It is usually represented by the letter (A).
The loudness or softness of a sound is determined basically by its amplitude. The
amplitude of the sound wave depends upon the force with which an object is made
to vibrate. If we strike a table lightly, we hear a soft sound because we produce a
sound wave of less energy (amplitude).
The quality or timber of sound is that characteristic which enables us to distinguish
one sound from another having the same pitch and loudness. The sound which is
more pleasant is said to be of a rich quality. A sound of single frequency is called a
tone. The sound which is produced due to a mixture of several frequencies is called
a note and is pleasant to listen to. Noise is unpleasant to the ear! Music is pleasant
to hear and is of rich quality.
(i) Pitch of sound is higher when
(a) Vibration of source of sound is higher
(b) Vibration of source of sound is Lower
