Introduction

Background of Study

Today, in our everyday lives there are alot of people trying to figure out
how they can kill the insects around their home without killing the Earth. In
support of that problem, the researchers studied Organic Insecticides, if it's
effective or not. An organic insecticide is a pesticide that uses only natural
components to kill bugs. In many cases, organic materials used to repel insects
are also called organic insecticides. This is not a true insecticide, but rather a
repellent. The insecticide that the researchers devised is preferable than the
store-bought insecticides that use chemicals since it is safer and more efficient.
But just because a product is labeled as organic or natural doesn't imply it isn't
harmful. Pesticides are chemical agents that are used to eliminate or control
pests. The Latin verb "cida," which means "to kill," is the root of the word.
Insecticides, rodenticides, herbicides, fungicides, biocides, and similar substances
all fall under the umbrella term "pesticides.

One of the ingredients of the Organic Insecticide is Malunggay or Moringa in

English, Malunggay is a wonderful herb known all over the world, it is best known as
an excellent source of nutrition and a natural energy booster loaded with vitamins
and amino acids. Malunggay includes a substance known as rubefacient. It is an
active component of malunggay leaves, an externally applied chemical that causes
skin redness by dilatation of capillaries and increased blood circulation. Another
ingredient of this is Garlic and Onion. Onions and garlic repel insects on plants
without hurting them or without the use of hazardous chemicals or commercial
insecticides.

The sulfur compounds in onions and garlic repel bugs by simply emitting a
stench that garden pests despise, and Chili is used as a gastrointestinal toxin,
antifeedant, and pest repellant. Lastly, the dishwashing liquid, it helps the Organic
Insecticide to last longer. These Organic Insecticides have so many good benefits,
like it increases the insects in our environment without killing it, and also it is more
affordable than the other insecticide that you can buy in the stores.

Review of Related Literature

Insecticides are compounds or mixes of substances that are commonly
used in agriculture and public health programs to protect plants against pests,
weeds, and illnesses, as well as humans from diseases including malaria, dengue
fever, and schistosomiasis. Horseradish leaves, onion, garlic, chili, and dishwashing
liquid are among the natural substances used in organic insecticides (CCOHS, 2017).
Organic insecticides degrade in the environment through biological and
physicochemical processes, posing no threat to society's health. Insecticides, on the
other hand, are compounds with specific qualities that regulate effectiveness in the
system, such as evaporation, oxidation, hydrolysis, and metabolization. The type and
reaction rate of insecticides and organic insecticides varies. Non-organic insecticides
are created synthetically, whereas organic insecticides are made from natural
materials. Because organic does not mean non-toxic, it is critical to read and follow
the instructions when using organic insecticide.

Furthermore, Dr. Pankaj Oudhia, one of the ingredients that make the
Organic Insecticide more effective is the Garlic, many plants are said to have a
pesticides properties. Garlic is one of them. We commonly use garlic when we cook
but aside from that garlic can also be used in decreasing pests and insecticides.
Garlic has antifeedant that insects don’t eat, bacterial, fungicidal, insecticidal,
nematicidal and repellent properties. Garlic is reportedly effective against a wide
range of disease-causing pathogens and insects at different stages in their life cycle
(egg, larvae, adult). This includes ants, aphids, armyworms, diamondback moth and
other caterpillars such as the false codling moth, pulse beetle, whitefly, wireworm,
khapra beetle, mice, mites, moles, Epilachna beetles, and termites as well as fungi
bacteria and nematodes. According to Zimbabwe University (2011), Onion (Allium
Cepa) and Garlic (Allium Savitum) have been used in the intercropping systems
because of their ability to repel insects and it’s because insects don't like the smell or
odor of it. They keep the insects away from our plants, we can say that it is more
eco-friendly and safer. Especially now that many people already use chemicals that
are very bad for our health and on Earth as well.

According to Kalia, a grade 8 student (Young Journalist Recipient, 2011) it is

possible for the researchers to make a effective organic insecticide using only the
materials that they can see at home, some people will maybe buy the synthetic one
because it is ready to use, while on the other hand you still need to make the Organic
Insecticide. But Organic Insecticides have more advantages than synthetic one
especially in our environment.

According to Zachary Smith (2022) some of the advantages of Organic

Insecticides are, most organic insecticides are considered safer and more
environmentally-friendly than man-made insecticides that are made with different
chemicals, and it will not pollute water and soil. On the other hand, the
disadvantages of it are, most organic insecticides don’t last that long and it can
cause itchiness of your nose, and bad feeling to your eyes if it accidentally sprayed to
you because of the extract of chili, onion and garlic. But, despite all of the
disadvantages of it, we should use this organic insecticide so that we can have a
healthier environment, as the researchers said, it is more eco-friendly. This is
perfect for eco-friendly minded people.
Statement of the Problem
This investigatory project aims find out if we can use Organic Insecticide and if it is effective,
and also to answer the following questions:

[Link] the organic insecticide effective or better than the other insecticides that
are brought from stores and uses chemicals?
[Link] we use organic insecticide to avoid insects in our plants?
3. How long before it loses its effectiveness and how many seconds does it
take to kill the insects?
4. Does organic insecticide work on all insects? Like ants, mosquitos, flies, etc.
5. Is the organic insecticide harmless for humans, especially for babies?

Hypothesis
Alternative Hypothesis: Organic Insecticide is effective in killing insects and
pests.
Null Hypothesis: Organic Insecticide is not effective in killing insects and
pests.

Significance of Study
Organic, plant-based insecticides that rely on plants' natural insect
defenses may be not only effective and economical, but also safer and more
environmentally friendly in safeguarding crops. The researchers created this organic
insecticide in order to create a substance that is environmentally friendly. Because
pollution is endangering our environment. Air pollution is one of these contaminants.
As a result, if you haven't noticed, the state of our world is deteriorating. One form of
air pollution is insecticides and pesticides, which contain hazardous chemicals. We
are all aware that the majority of insecticides and pesticides on the market today
include these hazardous substances. The researchers have created an organic
insecticide to help alleviate the problem of air pollution.
Scope and Delimitations of the Study
The scope of the researcher's investigation or experiment is only limited
to using natural and organic ingredients to make it, and for us to see if it's effective
or not. We will test it on some insects that we can find at our homes, like
cockroaches, ants, spiders, etc. The study entitled Organic Insecticides: A Mixture of
Malunggay Leaves, Big Onion, garlic and chili extract that can kill insects such as
cockroaches, spiders, ants [Link] can use this product, except for kids since it
is dangerous for our eyes. The organic insecticide was tested on ants, spiders,
cockroaches, etc. The researchers only used malunggay leaves, garlic, onion, and
chili in making the organic insecticide. This study focuses on using only natural
ingredients. Also, we tested it on some plants so we can see if it can be effective on
them too without killing their roots.

Type of Research
The researchers make use of experimental research in making Organic Insecticide,
because the researchers want to know if the Organic Insecticide can kill different
insects and if it can also kill the insects on the plants without killing it.

Research Locale
The experiment was conducted in each of the researchers home, due to the
pandemic the researchers are not able to meet in person, their houses are
located in Angeles City, Pampanga,Philippines.

Research Subjects
The research subjects of our Science Investigatory Project (SIP) some insects such
as ants, cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes were used in our SIP to test if they can
be killed by organic insecticide.
Conceptual Framework - include the IPO in your PPT

Data Collection
Instrument/Materials:
• Mortar and Pestle
• Piece of Cloth
• 2 bundles of Malunggay Leaves
•50ml Water/ 3 Tablespoons
• 15 pcs of Chili
•1 clove of Garlic
•1 Big Onion
•1 Spraying Bottle
•1 Chopping Board
•1 Knife
•1 Tablespoon of Dishwashing Liquid

A. Preparing the Organic Insecticide

•Remove the Malunggay leaves from its stalk.

•Peel and slice the Onion,Garlic and Chili into small pieces.

•Put the Malunggay leaves into the mortar and pestle, same for the Garlic,
Onion and Chilis. Then smash them so that their extract will come out.

•Then grab a piece of cloth, put some of the mixture there then squeeze it,
also add 50ml of water to it
•Pour it into a spray bottle.

•Once you have already poured it, pour a small amount of dishwashing
soap. 1 tablespoon is the exact amount that we poured. Then after that, it
is already done.

B. Testing the Organic Insecticide

The researchers tested the organic insecticide in some insects like spiders,
ants, mosquitoes, flies, and cockroaches. On the ants, when you spray it the
ants quickly die, same for the mosquitoes, flies, and spiders but you really
need to direct it on them because they are fast. On the cockroaches, one of the
researchers caught one cockroach and put it in a container, then sprayed the
organic insecticide in, and it died after 30-40secs.
Results
The researchers may claim that the insecticide they devised was successful because
they tested it on insects that are commonly found in our homes. The insects that the
researchers examined included ants, mosquitos, flies, and cockroaches. Ants,
mosquitos, and flies were promptly killed by the organic insecticide developed by the
researchers, and cockroaches perished half a minute later.

Conclusion
The Organic Insecticide is better than the store-bought ones, considering the fact
that the store-bought one uses chemicals while on the other hand the organic
insecticide is made from natural and organic ingredients, like the Chilis, Onions,
Garlic, and Malunggay Leaves. People can also use the organic insecticide in their
plants. When the researchers tested it on their plants 5 days ago, the plants were
still alive. When it comes to their effectiveness, on the ants, when you spray the
organic insecticide they quickly dies same in the flies, spiders and mosquitoes but
it needs to be directed to the insects since they are really fast, in cockroaches it
takes about half a minute for them to die. We are not able to test it in other
insects since we can only find ants, spiders, mosquitos, flies, and cockroaches in
our homes. But the researchers can say that it is really effective, because in the
cockroaches, if you simply step on the cockroaches, it is still a bit alive but when
we use the insecticide even though it takes half a minute it is effective after all.
The organic insecticide works on ants, mosquitoes, flies, spiders and cockroaches
(Those are only the insects that the researchers are able to find in their homes.)
The researchers suggest that if possible, keep it away from kids and babies since
they found it quite harmful for humans especially to kids and babies. What makes
it harmful is the smell of it, it has a strong scent. The researchers used Garlic,
Onion, and Chili to make it so as expected it would hurt our nose, just like when
we cut onions and chilies, it makes our eyes watery. So as much as possible keep
the organic insecticide away from the babies. The researchers made the organic
insecticide on March 21, 2022 and until now May 11, 2022 it still works so it’s been
51 days.
