QUARTER 4-MODULE 4
(Week 4-5)
Seasons
What I Need to Know
The module was designed to help you understand the relationship between the
seasons and the position of the Sun in the sky. A season is a part of a year. Most areas
of the Earth have four seasons in a year. The lessons are arranged to correspond with
the textbook you are now using.
The module includes activities, namely:
Activity 1 – Seasonal Tilt
Activity 2 – The Seasons of Life!
After going through this module, you are expected to:
Use models and relate:
1. the tilt of the Earth to the length of daytime;
2. the length of daytime to the amount of energy received;
3. the position of the Earth in its orbit to the height of the Sun in the sky;
4. the height of the Sun in the sky to the amount of energy received;
5. the latitude of an area to the amount of energy the area receives; and
6. the tilt of the Earth and the seasons.
What I Know
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a
separate sheet of paper.

Lesson
1 Seasons
What’s In
Have you ever wondered when do spring, summer, fall, and winter start and end?
This lesson explains the science behind the interesting occurrence of regularly changing
seasons.
Also, it gives you a chance to see how the phenomena of weather, climate, and
season are interrelated.
The activity below will assess what you have remembered about land and sea
breezes, monsoons, and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). Are you ready to work on
it?
Activity 1: Crossword Puzzle
Directions: Encircle the words related to land and sea breezes, monsoons, and
intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). The letters are arranged vertically, horizontally,
and diagonally. There are ten words in the puzzle.

What’s New
Season: Definition
A season is a division of the year based on changes in weather patterns and
daylight hours, resulting from the Earth’s changing with regards to the Sun. The Earth’s
axis is slightly tilted about to with concern to its orbit around the Sun. This motion
called revolution is the reason why we have different seasons. In some cases, the length
of day and night varies because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis. Places along with the
equator experience two seasons-dry and wet. However, places farther from the equator
have four seasons. In most cultures, including all western countries, the year is
commonly divided into four seasons: spring, summer, fall or autumn, and winter. Spring
begins on the spring equinox; summer begins on the summer solstice; fall or autumn
begins on the fall of the equinox, and winter begins on the winter solstice. (See figure 1
below.)
As the Earth goes around the Sun, the Northern and Southern hemispheres are
alternately exposed to the direct rays of the Sun, leading to the annual changes in
seasons.
Table 1: Shows the seasons where each month falls
Seasons Northern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere
Winter December to February June to August
Spring March to May September to November
Summer June to September December to March
Fall September to November March to May

What I Have Learned
Activity: Fill me Up:
Directions: Rearrange the jumbled letters to form a word to complete the idea of
the paragraph.

it revolves around the sun. Sometimes the direct rays of the sun will hit the Northern
Hemisphere and at other times the direct rays will strike the3. (thernous).
Whichever hemisphere receives the direct rays of the sun will experience
4. (mersum). And the other hemisphere will receive oblique rays will be
5. (twiner) .
What I Can Do
Congratulations! You have already learned about the different reasons why do
seasons change. Now it’s time for you to deepen your understanding by making a diary
on how seasons affect your life during the pandemic.

Additional Activities
Following are the different situations that are related to the motions of the Earth.
Explain why each scenario occurs using your knowledge of the effects of the Earth’s
movements in its axis around the Sun.
Scenario Reason
Myra’s father is working abroad. She has to wake up at
midnight to call her father in his office in Los Angeles,
California.
Some people experience jet lag – a condition in which a
person finds it hard to sleep in a place with a different
time zone.
The Sun seems late during December and January,
making some people report late to work.
