FILM REVIEW: DANGEROUS MINDS SYNOPSIS

(WRITE YOUR OWN BASED ON WHAT YOU HAVE WATCHED)
Based on what I have watched, I can say that "Dangerous Minds" is about a tough
teacher named LouAnne who works with students who have hard lives. She helps them
believe in themselves and do better in school. LouAnne uses different ways to teach,
and she cares a lot about her students. Even though some people don't like her
methods, she keeps helping her students succeed.
CHARACTERIZE THE FOLLOWING:

(Describe their role and the significance they have to the film.)
1. Louanne Johnson - She's the main teacher in the movie. She's determined and cares
a lot about her students. She helps them believe in themselves and do better in school.
2. Mr. Grandey (the principal) - The principal of the school. At first, he doesn't think
LouAnne's ways of teaching will work, but later he supports her because he sees how
much she helps the students.
3. Raul - Raul is one of LouAnne's students. He acts tough and is in a gang. But with
LouAnne's help, he changes and learns to do better in school.
4. Caliee - Callie is another student in LouAnne's class. She doesn't seem interested in
school at first. But LouAnne encourages her, and Callie starts to believe in herself and
gets better at schoolwork.
5. Emilio - Emilio is a student who gets into trouble with gangs. LouAnne helps him see
a better path for himself. He learns from her and starts to make better choices.
REFLECTION:
1. Based on the video lecture on Cross Cultural Communication, reflect or explain some
of the highlights of the film. Give three highlights with reflection.
I can say the highlights of the film are: First, about the Understanding of Different
Cultures — it is one of the important part of the movie when the teacher, LouAnne,
learns about her students' lives and where they come from. Even though she's different
from them, she takes time to understand their neighborhoods and what they go through.
This shows how important it is to respect and understand other people's cultures, even
if they're different from our own. Second, about using or showing actions to Show Care
— it is aother important thing in the movie as its how LouAnne uses more than just
words to connect with her students. She shows she cares by how she moves, looks at
them, and talks to them. This teaches us that sometimes actions can speak louder than
words, especially when trying to connect with people who might have different
backgrounds. Third, about changing the Way We Talk as LouAnne changes the way she
talks to her students to help them understand better. She knows that not everyone
learns the same way, so she finds new and creative ways to teach them. This shows us
that it's important to be flexible and adjust how we communicate to help others learn
and understand, especially when they come from different backgrounds.
2. What can you say about the film?

I can say that "Dangerous Minds" is an inspiring movie about a caring teacher named
LouAnne who works in a challenging school. Despite facing tough situations, she goes
above and beyond to connect with her students and help them succeed. Through her
dedication and creativity, she inspires them to believe in themselves and strive for a
better future. The film highlights the importance of empathy, determination, and
resilience in overcoming obstacles. It's a heartwarming story that teaches valuable
lessons about the power of education and the impact of compassion. With that,
"Dangerous Minds" reminds us that with the right support and encouragement, anything
is possible.
UNIT 2
THE TIE-BACK
1. In your own words, define intercultural communication.
In my own words, I believe that intercultural communication is about how people from
different cultures talk and understand each other. It involves sharing ideas and
information while respecting each other's differences in language, behavior, and beliefs.
This type of communication helps build connections between people of diverse
backgrounds, allowing them to learn from each other and work together effectively. It's
important to be open minded and respectful when engaging in intercultural
communication for better understanding and mutual respect.
2. What is the effect of “gender” in communication?

I believe that gender affects how people talk and act. Men and women might
communicate differently because of how they're taught to behave. Sometimes this can
cause misunderstandings or make people have unfair opinions about each other.
3. Give one characteristics of one competent intercultural communicator and how are
you able to apply it in the future?
I believe that an important quality of a good intercultural communicator is empathy. This
means caring about and understanding how others feel, especially those from different
cultures. In the future, I can use empathy by listening carefully to others, trying to
understand their feelings, and respecting their culture when I talk to them. This helps
build trust and understanding between people from different backgrounds.
THE TIE-BACK
1. How do food speak in our palate and senses?
I can say that food talks to us through how it tastes, feels, smells, and looks. For
example, a sweet mango can make us happy, while warm bread can make us feel cozy.
2. How are there only two words for the tea?

Based on what I read, people use only two words for tea, "tea" and "chai," because
they're widely known and used in many places. "Tea" comes from Chinese and Dutch
influences, while "chai" is used in South Asia, like India.
3. Share an experience that you actually use food as communication in a situation.

I gave my grandma her favorite cake to show her I cared during her birthday. When she
tasted it, her face lit up with happiness. Without saying anything, the cake showed her
how much I loved her. It made our bond stronger, just by sharing something tasty
together.
Activity: Write a journal where you or a person you know experience and encounter
multicular communication. Tell a story how you or the person you know faced and went
through it. Write your response on the space provided below.
Few months ago, I met students from different countries at a cafe after a leadership
training. Talking to them was fun but challenging because we all communicated
differently. One is from Spain and she used gestures, while the other one grew up in
another country too (I forgot her country). I had to listen carefully and be respectful of
their cultures and the way they talk. We shared stories and laughed over language
mistakes. It was a great learning experience, showing me how important it is to
understand and respect people from different backgrounds. Even though we're different,
we can still connect and have fun together.
