Marketing is the process of identifying customer needs and determining how best
to meet those needs. In contrast, advertising is the exercise of promoting a
company and its products or services through paid channels. In other words,
advertising is a component of marketing.
Advertising
Advertising is a marketing tactic involving paying for space to promote a
product, service, or cause. The actual promotional messages are called
advertisements, or ads for short. The goal of advertising is to reach people most
likely to be willing to pay for a company's products or services and entice them to
buy.

What Is Advertising?

Advertising is the action of calling public attention to an offering through paid

announcements by an identified sponsor.

According to Kotler –

Advertising is any paid form of non-personal presentation & promotion of ideas,

goods, or services by an identified sponsor.
According to the Advertising Association of the UK –

Characteristics of Advertising

 Paid Form: Advertising requires the advertiser (also called sponsor) to pay
to create an advertising message, buy advertising media slot, and monitor
advertising efforts.
 Tool for Promotion: Advertising is an element of the promotion mix of an
organization.
 One Way Communication: Advertising is a one-way communication
where brands communicate to the customers through different mediums.
 Personal or Non-Personal: Advertising can be non-personal as in the case
of TV, radio, or newspaper advertisements, or highly personal as in the case
of social media and other cookie-based advertisements.

What are the Types of Advertising You’ll Learn at Bennett?

Social Media Advertising

Brands use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter
to communicate with customers and promote their products. With the emergence
of digital marketing, it has quickly become one of the most sought advertising
strategies. Your one-year diploma course in advertising and marketing will help
you learn how you can harness social media platforms for a successful marketing
strategy.

Paid Search Advertising

In this form of advertising, the advertisers bid on specific keywords, and the search
engine pops relevant ads whenever a user enters a query with those keywords at
the top of the results page. With paid search advertising, the advertiser has to pay
for the ad only if someone clicks on the link to follow through. An advertising and
marketing course in one of the top colleges in India will help you understand the
technicalities of paid search advertising and how it helps a brand grow.

Print Advertising
Print advertising is perhaps one of the oldest forms of marketing. As digital
marketing practices gain more popularity, the scope of print advertising has
significantly shrunk. However, it remains one of the most effective forms of
advertising. A diploma course in advertising and marketing from one of the top
universities in Delhi will help you understand how to utilise the print media to
create an effective marketing strategy.

Broadcast Advertising
Broadcast advertising utilises mass-media platforms such as TV channels and radio
stations to connect with potential customers and share information about the brand
and its products. A well-structured marketing strategy can utilise these platforms to
reach out to a large customer base and engage them because, unlike social media
platforms, viewers do not have the option to skip these ads.

Out-of-Home Advertising
This type of advertising refers to any ads that people may encounter while they are,
as the name suggests, outside their homes. It includes billboard ads, digital
signage, ads in sporting complexes, stadiums, and more. Although expensive, it is
an effective strategy, and brands have used this medium creatively to develop
advertisements that connect with the people and convert to sales. Developing a
marketing strategy using out-of-home advertising is complicated since people
mostly notice them fleetingly, seeing how they are placed and positioned.

Mobile Advertising
With the time people spend on their mobile devices, it is unsurprising that brands
are now developing ads, especially for mobile devices. Investing in an effective
marketing strategy utilising mobile advertising can turn great returns for the brand.
Therefore, the advertising and digital marketing course module at Bennett
University also focuses on how you can make the best out of this type of
advertisings.

Direct Mail Advertising

Advertisers send messages to a targeted set of customers via letters, subscriptions,
sales letters, or emails. Although it is not a widely used form of advertisement, it
can be harnessed to create a successful marketing campaign. The scope for direct
mail advertising is vast and slowly gaining momentum amongst brands. Bennett
University’s diploma course in advertising and marketing teaches you how visually
arresting and creative direct mails can direct sales for brands.

Objectives Of Advertising

There are 3 main objectives of advertising – to inform about the brand or offering,
to persuade to buy or perform a task and to remind and reinforce the brand
message.

To Inform

Advertisements are used to increase brand awareness and brand exposure in

the target market. Informing potential customers about the brand and its products is
the first step toward attaining business goals.

To Persuade

Persuading customers to perform a particular task is a prominent objective of

advertising. The tasks may involve buying or trying the products and services
offered, forming a brand image, developing a favorable attitude towards the brand
etc.

To Remind

Another objective of advertising is to reinforce the brand message and to reassure

the existing and potential customers about the brand vision. Advertising helps the
brand to maintain top-of-mind awareness and to avoid competitors stealing the
customers. This also helps in the word of mouth marketing.
Other objectives of advertising are subsets of these three objectives. These subsets
are:

 Brand building
 Increasing sales
 Creating demand
 Engagement
 Expanding customer base
 Changing customers’ attitudes, etc.

Importance Of Advertising

To The Customers

 Convenience: Targeted informative advertisements make the customer’s

decision-making process easier as they get to know what suits their
requirements and budget.
 Awareness: Advertising educates the customers about different products
available in the market and their features. This knowledge helps customers
compare different products and choose the best product for them.
 Better Quality: Only brands advertise themselves and their products. There
are no advertisements for unbranded products. This ensures better customer
quality and a good business model as no brand wants to waste money on
false advertising.

To The Business

 Awareness: Advertising increases brand and product awareness among the

people belonging to the target market.
 Brand Image: Clever advertising helps the business to form the desired
brand image and brand personality in the minds of the customers.
 Product Differentiation: Advertising helps the business differentiate its
product from competitors’ and communicate its features and advantages to
the target audience.
 Increases Goodwill: Advertising reiterates brand vision and increases the
brand’s goodwill among its customers.
 Value For Money: Advertising delivers the message to a wide audience and
tends to be value for money when compared to other elements of the
promotion mix.
Advantages of Advertising

 Reduces Per-Unit Cost: The wide appeal of advertisements increases the

demand for the product which benefits the organization as it capitalizes on
the economies of scale.
 Helps in Brand Building: Advertisements work effectively in brand
building. Brands that advertise are preferred over those which doesn’t.
 Helps in Launching New Product: Launching a new product is easy when it
is backed by an advertisement.
 Boosts up Existing Customers’ Confidence in The Brand: Advertisements
boost existing customers’ confidence in the brand as they feel pride when
they see an advertisement of the product or the brand they use.
 Helps
 I n Reducing Customer Turnover: Strategic advertisements for new offers
and better service help reduce customer turnover.
 Attracts New Customers: Attractive advertisements help the brand in
gaining new customers and expanding the business.
 Educates The Customers: Advertisements inform the customers about
different products existing in the market and also educate them on what they
should look for in an apt product.

Disadvantages of Advertising

 Increases the Costs: Advertising is an expense to the business and is added

to the cost of the product. This cost is eventually borne by the end consumer.
 Confuses the Buyer: Too many advertisements with similar claims often
confuse the buyer about what to buy and whether they should buy the
product or not.
 Is Sometimes Misleading: Some advertisements use smart strategies to
mislead the customers.
Only For Big Businesses: Advertising is costly, and only big businesses can
afford it. This puts small businesses out of competition with big businesses that get
to enjoy a monopoly in the market.
 Encourages The Sale Of Inferior Products: Effective advertisements even
lead to the sale of inferior products which aren’t good for the consumers.
Advertising Examples

We are surrounded by advertisements. From TV to our mobile phones, we

encounter advertisements everywhere. Following are a few examples of
advertising.

Top 14 Principles of an Organization

Some of those principles are discussed as follows:

1. Principle of Objective:
The enterprise should set up certain aims for the achievement of which various
departments should work. A common goal so devised for the business as a whole
and the organization is set up to achieve that goal. In the absence of a common
aim, various departments will set up their own goals and there is a possibility of
conflicting objectives for different departments. So there must be an objective for
the organization.

2. Principle of Specialization:
The organization should be set up in such a way that every individual should be
assigned a duty according to his skill and qualification. The person should continue
the same work so that he specialises in his work. This helps in increasing
production in the concern.

3. Principles of Co-ordination:
The co-ordination of different activities is an important principle of the
organization. There should be some agency to co-ordinate the activities of various
departments. In the absence of co-ordination there is a possibility of setting up
different goals by different departments. The ultimate aim of the concern can be
achieved only if proper co-ordination is done for different activities.

4. Principle of Authority and Responsibility:

The authority flows downward in the line. Every individual is given authority to
get the work done. Though authority can be delegated but responsibility lies with
the man who has been given the work. If a superior delegates his authority to his
subordinate, the superior is not absolved of his responsibility, though the
subordinate becomes liable to his superior. The responsibility cannot be delegated
under any circumstances.

5. Principle of Definition:
The scope of authority and responsibility should be clearly defined. Every person
should know his work with definiteness. If the duties are not clearly assigned, then
it will not be possible to fix responsibility also. Everybody’s responsibility will
become nobody’s responsibility. The relationship between different departments
should also be clearly defined to make the work efficient and smooth.

6. Span of Control:
Span of control means how many subordinates can be supervised by a supervisor.
The number of subordinates should be such that the supervisor should be able to
control their work effectively. Moreover, the work to be supervised should be of
the same nature. If the span of control is disproportionate, it is bound to affect the
efficiency of the workers because of slow communication with the supervisors.

7. Principle of Balance:
The principle means that assignment of work should be such that every person
should be given only that much work which he can perform well. Some person is
over worked and the other is under-worked, then the work will suffer in both the
situations. The work should be divided in such a way that everybody should be
able to give his maximum.

8. Principle of Continuity:
The organization should be amendable according to the changing situations.
Everyday there are changes in methods of production and marketing systems. The
organization should be dynamic and not static. There should always be a
possibility of making necessary adjustments.
9. Principle of Uniformity:
The organization should provide for the distribution of work in such a manner that
the uniformity is maintained. Each officer should be in-charge of his respective
area so as to avoid dual subordination and conflicts.

10. Principle of Unity of Command:

There should be a unity of command in the organization. A person should be
answerable to one boss only. If a person is under the control of more than one
person then there is a like-hood of confusion and conflict. He gets contradictory
orders from different superiors. This principle creates a sense of responsibility to
one person. The command should be from top to bottom for making the
organization sound and clear. It also leads to consistency in directing, coordinating
and controlling.

11. Principle of Exception::

This principle states that top management should interfere only when something
goes wrong. If the things are done as per plans then there is no need for the
interference of top management. The management should leave routine things to
be supervised by lower cadres. It is only the exceptional situations when attention
of top management is drawn. This principle relieves top management of many
botherations and routine things. Principle of exception allows top management to
concentrate on planning and policy formulation. Important time of management is
not wasted on avoidable supervision.

12. Principle of Simplicity:

The organizational structure should be simple so that it is easily understood by
each and every person. The authority, responsibility and position of every person
should be made clear so that there is no confusion about these things. A complex
organizational structure will create doubts and conflicts among persons. There may
also be over-lapping’s and duplication of efforts which may otherwise be avoided.
It helps in smooth running of the organization.

13. Principle of Efficiency:

The organization should be able to achieve enterprise objectives at a minimum
cost. The standards of costs and revenue are pre-determined and performance
should be according to these goals. The organization should also enable the
attainment of job satisfaction to various employees.

14. Scalar Principle:

This principle refers to the vertical placement of supervisors starting from top and
going to the lower level. The scalar chain is a pre-requisite for effective and
efficient organization.

Background
The Warehouse in which the fire broke out, consisted stock worth 1 lakh, which
was still not accounted for excise duty, But Fortunately it was insured.
Findings
According to fire officials the fire has broke out due to electric short circuit. The
short circuit has happened because of the leakage of water pipe near the electric
