How to select
When coursebooks don’t cover everything: nowadays, books seem to come with everything
(flashcards, videos, puppets, etc) because we now know that we have all types of students and
learning styles so we must adapt to the situation to ensure learning.
As a benefit in the learning process: some students need more visual support, others are more
auditory and sometimes, we have classes where we need to be completely unpredictable.
Unconventional material – that is, something besides the textbook or the board – truly tests
students’ knowledge of any subject. If they can complete a survey, for example, that means that
they understood rather than a gap fill exercise.
Aims: if my objective is for my students to simply complete a controlled practice, supplementary
material is not needed. But, if we’re presenting a topic some materials will prove more effective.
