Teacher’s Guide

READING PRETEST TO BULIG BASA RECIPIENTS

Purpose
This reading pretest aims to:
1. determine the baseline reading levels of the struggling readers;
2. obtain information on what specific reading lessons and skills the learners have and
have not mastered;
3. guide the teachers in responding to the specific reading deficiencies of the
learners;
4. allow the reading teachers to monitor and establish the learners’ reading progress;
and
5. provide information on the effectiveness of reading instruction and of this reading
material - the Reading Links - in addressing reading difficulties.

Administering the Reading Pretest to Bulig Basa Recipients


To obtain meaningful scores of the learners, please follow the following
procedure:

1. Ensure that the testing condition is conducive for the learner.


2. Provide the learner a copy of the pretest.
3. Hold the file copy and put check ( ) marks for correct responses and cross ( X )
marks for wrong answers in the second column.
4. Point to each item and put a check mark if the learner was able to identify and
sound out all the given set in each number. Put a check mark also for each number
if the learner was able to blend the given two letters.
5. For words, phrases and sentences, put a check mark if the learner was able to
decode or read correctly each item.
6. For reading comprehension, the learner is given a check mark for each correct
answer in every item.
7. The learner gets a cross mark (X) or doesn’t get a credit if he or she:
a. hesitates for more than three (3) seconds before giving the correct letter names,
sounds and blending as well as before reading the words, phrases and sentences;
b. gives incorrect letter names, sounds, and blending;
c. fails to read correctly the single words and a component word or words of
phrases and sentences.
8. When the assessment is completed, record the total scores in the table of
SUMMARY of SCORES.
9. Keep a record of the learner’s scores for reference and easy monitoring of his or
her reading progress.
10. Maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the pretest results.

them.
