CHAPTER 1: PRELIMINARY

One Direction is a British-Irish vocal group based in London, consisting of Niall

Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson until the departure of Zayn Malik
in 2015. They are signed to Simon Cowell's record label, Syco Records, after forming and
finishing in third place on the seventh season of the British television singing competition
The X Factor in 2010. Gaining international success via social media, One Direction's five
albums, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four
(2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015), topped the market in many countries and spawned
hit singles including "What Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young", "Best Song
Ever", "Story of My Life" and "Drag Me Down". Their accolades include six Brit Awards,
four MTV Video Music Awards, eleven MTV Europe Music Awards, seven American
Music Awards (including Artist of the Year in 2014 and 2015), and 28 Teen Choice
Awards.
One Direction made $50 million in 2012 and was named "Top New Artist" by
Billboard in 2012. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)
named them the Global Recording Artists of 2013. In 2015, Forbes ranked them as the
fourth-highest grossing celebrity in the world, and second in 2016. Following the release
of Four, One Direction became the first group in the history of the US Billboard 200 to
have their first four albums debut at number one. Their third album, Midnight Memories,
was the biggest-selling album worldwide of 2013. Their Where We Are Tour to promote
Midnight Memories and Four was the highest-grossing concert tour of 2014 and the
highest-grossing tour by a group vocal. It earned $282 million. In 2014, Billboard named
One Direction the artist of the year. The group went on hiatus in January 2016, allowing all
participants to pursue projects on their own. As of 2017, the group has sold a total of 50
million records worldwide.

2.1 Background of The Song

"Story of My Life" is a song recorded by the English-Irish boy band One

Direction. It was released on October 28, 2013 by Syco Music and Columbia Records as
the second single from the group's third studio album, Midnight Memories (2013). Written
by band members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Louis
Tomlinson, along with Julian Bunetta, Jamie Scott, John Ryan, and Hanoch Dagan The
lyrics speak of a tumultuous relationship leading to lament and heartbreak.

The song premiered at 4 p.m. on stations worldwide such as BBC Radio 1 (UK),
The Hits Radio (UK), In:Demand (UK), Capital FM (UK), The End 107.9 FM (USA),
NRJ Radio (in both France and Sweden), Planet Radio (Germany), Radio Mix (Brazil),
SiriusXM Hits (America), and many others. The audio for the song was also uploaded onto
the official One Direction Vevo account as well as the official One Direction Youtube
account.

The song was released on Monday, October 28th, to those who had either bought
the EP or had pre-ordered the deluxe or regular edition of Midnight Memories. The official
One Direction YouTube account released a message from the band announcing the single
release. They song went straight to number one on iTunes in 47 countries such as the
UK, US, Australia, Belgium, India, Mexico, and many other places.

On July 5, 2020, in honor of the band's 10 year anniversary, a 4K version of Story

of My Life was released.

2.2 Song Meaning

The song "Story of My Life" turns out to have a different meaning than expected. If
we hear the song, it's definitely about a love story. But actually, this is also related to
family problems. This song has a very deep meaning.

Write on the wall everything that can't be explained, all the old memories. They (1D) try to
have fun, but it's still empty; missing family can't be replaced by having fun. Their families
say everything will not be the same if they are not by their side. Maybe all these stories
will be written on their tombstones later.

But they have to go (after the X-factor) to tour everywhere, but their feet are heavy to go.
But this is the only way to make their family happy. Flashback of when they took care of
their family and hoped everything would come back again. They remember that they used
to be loved by their family, but they like to hurt them. They really can't express how much
they miss their families. They really can't express how much they miss; even though they
actually can, it still makes their hearts unable to forget those memories. Their activities
forced them to leave. But this is a way to make their family happy; they used to be waiting
for this moment (success and becoming an adult).

But chasing the past is just like chasing the clouds—it won't work. They remember that
when they were little, they used to spend time with their families—with their mothers,
brothers and sisters, grandparents, etc. And the SOML video tells us that without their
family, they wouldn't exist now. This story doesn't exist. Family means a lot. They were
nothing until they became famous like they are now; they are still children, grandchildren,
brothers, and sisters in their family. They are still members of the old family, which will
not change until they die. Because what we do now will be the story of my life in the
future.

2.3 Story Of Song

"Story of My Life" is about a person who gives his all in a relationship, and he
keeps trying and moving on to make her happy. The lines in the chorus seem to be
someone continuing to be there for someone because of how much they love them, but
they know that after all, it's just going to go back to something they don't want to be. He
really wanted something to happen again, and he understood what he had to do to chase
after someone who wasn't going to be there. It's about love and offering family and home
(where we grew up) as one of the best places to find true love.
According to Zayn, he thinks the message of the song is to remember all the details
in your life that make up the story of your life. He said it's about remembering people—the
people and relationships you have that made you who you are today. In an interview with
MTV News, co-writer Jamie Scott explained the quintet had a knack for doing it, saying:
"It's not a hard thing to do because your boy has a really good voice. They all have very
different sounds. Harry's husky voice is something you can always count on; all boys have
great voices.
For example, the demo we played for boys sounded a lot simpler than it does now.
That's what's so amazing about their voices—they instantly sound like them. Jamie Scott
has also said in another interview with the British newspaper The Guardian that this is the
song he is most proud to write, and the reason for this is: "Because we changed the game
for them. In the history of all boy bands, they're usually on the decline [by the third
album]. With that song, I feel like we lifted them to another level." Niall Horan spoke
about the first time Scott played the song for them in an interview with British radio
station Capital FM. He said: "We were in Nottingham on tour when we did our UK tour in
February and March, and we just came into the room one day and he was like, 'I have this
song that I wrote and I want to play it for you. And we fell in love with it as soon as we
heard about it.

In conclusion, the song "Story of My Life" teaches us that we should not neglect
our family or the people we care about. Maybe if we didn't have them now, we wouldn't be
here today.
