SECOND CONDITIONAL

ESL / EFL RESOURCES Stranded on a Desert Island

Read the hypothetical situation: You wake up and find yourself stranded on a desert island.
You don't know how you got there and you're very confused. All you find is a backpack containing
the objects from Exercise C.

D. If this were you, what would you do with each of the objects to help you survive?

Example: If I had some matches, I would use them to make a fire for warmth and cooking.

1. If I had ............................., I would .........................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

2. If I had ............................., I ..................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

3. If I had ...................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

4. If I .........................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

5. If ............................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

6. ...............................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

7. ...............................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

8. ...............................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................

Now, read the second part: That afternoon, you start to imagine what four items you would
trade if you met someone else on the island, e.g. 'If someone had a lighter, I would trade it for
my flashlight'.

E. Use the second conditional to say which four items you would trade and for what
other items. If possible, explain why.

1. ...............................................................................................................................

2. ...............................................................................................................................

3. ...............................................................................................................................

4. ...............................................................................................................................
