Hospitality students should seek employment in the hospitality industry.

However, not all graduates end up working in the hospitality industry as their decision
to do so or not is influenced by a number of factors, which either pull towards or push
students away from working in the hospitality industry. To improve the understanding
of the push and pull factors, this study was aimed at exploring the perceptions,
feelings and attitudes of hospitality students towards working in the hospitality
industry as these feelings contribute to mentioned factors. A qualitative research
approach was followed. Twenty-seven full-time final year hospitality management
students at a university in South Africa were interviewed to collect data. The
researcher did the coding and identified themes that emerged during analysis. The
themes revealed that the students had mixed feelings about having careers in the
hospitality industry. Both positive and negative feelings and attitudes were expressed
by the students towards working in the hospitality industry and these were influenced
by factors termed motivators or de-motivators for having careers in the hospitality
industry. The motivators and de-motivators stemmed from the students’ past work
experience during their internships. Finally, recommendations were made to various
stakeholders in the hospitality industry to make them aware of factors that could
demotivate prospective employees.

Career choice is a complex decision for students since it determines the kind
of profession that they intend to pursue in life. As students try to make career choice,
they face problems of matching their career choices with their abilities and academic
performance. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that influence career
choice among students undertaking hospitality management such as personal,
environmental and opportunity. The target population was selected students. The
sample size was 100 students. Stratified and systematic random sampling techniques
were used in the study whereas the students were grouped in strata of year of study.
Data was collected using questionnaires which were analyzed using descriptive
statistics and presented in the form of bar graphs and frequency Tables. The findings
showed that majority of students are influenced by opportunity and environmental
factors and not influenced by personal factors. However, the findings also showed
that students opted, selected and preferred hospitality careers despite many other
alternatives that were open to them. The study recommends intensive advertisements
by institutions offering hospitality and also career education to enable students make
informed decisions.

This chapter deals with the research method. This includes the research
methods and instruments used, study design, population and sample, respondents,
data collection procedures and statistical treatment of data. Study design the study
used a descriptive research method to determine how BSHM students perceive their
course. Descriptive research was considered appropriate because the process involves
searching, collecting, describing, analyzing and interpreting information. In addition,
the researchers used a survey method through questionnaires and interviews. Using
this method, the researchers collected information about the study from the
respondents. They then tabulate, present and analyze the data to make observations.
Population, sample size and sampling technique the respondents of this study
consisted of 100 BSHM students in Caloocan St. from Clare College. In the first
semester of the academic year 2023-2024. In particular, the answers of the
respondents using modified questionnaires were used to gather information about the
perception of BSHM students about their course. The researchers used random
sampling. To do this, the researchers first listed the population and then randomly
selected participants to replenish the sample quota based on response availability. All
randomly selected respondents are asked to rate their opinions about the hospitality
management course.

PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) program is a

degree program that prepares students for careers in the leisure industry, specifically
in culinary and accommodation operations. The program offers specializations in
Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Culinary Arts and Kitchen Operations, and
Cruise Line Operations. Graduates of the program can pursue various careers in the
hospitality industry, such as bartenders, chefs, hotel managers, and event managers.
BSHM students have the opportunity to explore the real world and conduct research,
culminating in a thesis defense. In addition, the program focuses on developing
technical skills, knowledge in marketing and finance, and entrepreneurship skills. In
this research study, we aim to investigate the perception of BSHM students on their
course, including their experiences in their field placements, their level of satisfaction
with the program, and their plans post-graduation. Students may want to enroll in a
Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) course for various reasons,
including interest in the hospitality industry and desire for a career in hospitality
management. BSHM programs also offer opportunities for entrepreneurship, practical
and hands-on training, and various career opportunities in the field. The program
provides students with technical skills, as well as knowledge in marketing, finance,
budgeting, staffing, and other fields of business. The curriculum of BSHM courses is
designed to meet the global demands and requirements of the hospitality industry.
Overall, students who have a passion for the leisure industry and want to build a
career in this field may find a BSHM course beneficial.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Introduction

This chapter indicates the ideas relevant to the present subject relating to the

other studies and is briefly discussed to provide the foundation of the proposed study

in order to develop a new method and procedures, careful review of literature and

studies had done for the development of the system.

Literature

Local.
Suhag et al. (2016); Yilmaz [Link]. (2017). Motivation has some implications
for students' learning and behavior. Motivation directs behavior toward specific goals.
Motivation establishes distinct goals for people to strive for and consequently
influences students' decisions. Motivation also improves effort and energy to
determine whether a student will pursue a challenging activity with passion or a
lifeless attitude. Motivation will significantly influence students' learning and
achievement by influencing the beginning and continuity of activities and extending
the time of the student's obligations.

Ochoa and Torre (2014). Recommend this education the program can focus
on promoting communication between them parents and children, train parents to
communicate with no. Teach in a non-confrontational manner, giving children
opportunities to express their thoughts and feelings. This research reviews published
and unpublished research on child rearing, parenting, and discipline conducted for
Filipino families from 2004 to 2014 document analysis. However, other researchers
more critical about the relevance of ideas about raising a Filipino child may be the
same as raising other children. Interpretation of parental controls.

Roberts (2013). Research has shown that when parents impose their decisions
on their children, the children are unable to live up to their parents' expectations,
leading to very disappointing outcomes for the children. It causes guilt, which affects

his actions and decisions. Finally, there are also reasons related to personal issues,
such as exam anxiety or concentration problems.

Foreign.

Teerati and Wattanasan (2016). The students identified tourism and hospitality
as important fields in which to offer their knowledge and expertise.

T.S. Natarajan & G.P. Raman (2018). The study was conducted to know the
current trend of perception and preference among final year graduates of hotel
management institutions in Chennai city. The study with gathered evidence concluded
that there is a demand for hotel management education, Internal and External factors
influence perception and preferences and there will be qualified human capital
available to the hotel industry

Anoop Kumar (2014). This study conclude that students do not find a
congenial work environment been provided in the industry as well they do not find
the job as respectable as others. Even the nature of the hospitality job lacks challenges
for students. Moreover, they perceive negative towards opportunities offered by the
industry for self development. The industry needs to concentrate on these above
mentioned variables so as to improve the perception of males that lead to better
skilled man force to serve the industry and fulfill the human resource requirement.

According to Kimaro (2015). Both children and parents can benefit. In her
report, she found that involving parents in their children's schooling often increases
children's self-esteem, improves children's academic performance, improves parent-
child relationships, and helps parents feel positive about school. It was revealed that it
helps to develop attitudes and deepen understanding of school process.

(Goeldner & Ritchie, 2013). The hospitality industry is also one of the most
diversified industries in the world because of the wide number of different
occupations and professions involved in it. The industry also operates on regional,
national, as well as global levels and involves different sectors of an economy such as
government, non-profit, and for profit. To understand the dynamics of hospitality
education, it is important to have a simplistic, yet, detailed viewpoint of the
hospitality industry. Several research works have defined and categorized the
industry.

CHED (2017) entitled Revised Guidelines for Student Internship Program in

the Philippines states that the internship program is meant to provide the students with
an opportunity to complement their formal learning with the practical knowledge,
skills, and desirable attitudes while gaining hands-on experience in recognized Host
Training Establishment.

The curriculum of the programs is aimed to prepare graduates to be highly

competent and competitive practitioners both within and outside of the institution.
The growing requirement for greater sustainability in this industry has
resulted in the development of new curricular and learning environments.

Cavas (2013) and Yilmaz, motivation is a crucial component of education

since it aids in the promotion of new learning and performance by using previously
acquired abilities, methods, and behaviors. A decent curriculum and effective
teaching are not sufficient to ensure students' success in the absence of motivation.
Psychological, social, and cultural factors that affect student motivation and
achievement include: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, parental involvement and
influence, family history, peer pressure, self-efficacy expectations, effort, the value
placed on a relative, anxiety, self-regulation, and goal-setting, perceptions of talent,
learning strategies, teaching methods, and school environment.

Cruz, 2013. Students' motivation is essential to their learning since it

significantly impacts their competency level. Motivations can arise from course
selection and change according to preferences that personal, societal, and economic
factors can influence. Encouraging students may assist them in realizing the rewards
and goals they aim to reach in selecting a college degree.

Kim 2014) posit that the hospitality sector endeavours to attract young and
dynamic graduates who possess knowledge, skills and competencies that match sector
trends and needs. It is therefore a challenge for higher education institutions to train a
diverse and quality workforce who are prepared for the dynamism and increased
mobility that characterise this sector

Gabaldon(2023), the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology,

Within the confines of this institution, the investigation was focused on the
Hospitality Management department, targeting students enrolled in this field. A

descriptive research design was chosen as the most appropriate approach for this
study, aiming to gather and scrutinize data relating to the perceptions of Hospitality
Management students regarding different learning modalities. This design facilitated a
comprehensive and detailed collection of data that would best serve the study's
objectives. In terms of sampling, the researchers opted for a convenience sampling
strategy that tapped into the accessible population of second, third, and fourth-year
Hospitality Management students.

Tran et. al. (2018). The family socio-economic status also has significant
relation to academic performance of students (Sollano et al., 2018). Because family
size, parent’s backgrounds, parent’s qualifications and parents’ level of income is
significant in affecting the academic performance and selection of course (Abdu-
Raheem, 2015). However, students who have different level socio-economic status
are also having a different level on academic achievement (Bhat et al., 2016).

Soheilahamzehloo et. al. (2015). Participation is important for the success of

the class. Many researches about participation have been cited in the study of
Mahdikhani, Accordingly, participation can be seen as an active involvement process
which can be divided into five classifications, namely; preparation, contribution to
discussion, group works, communication skills, and attendance. The faculty perceive
several levels of participation from students, moving from simply attending class
through giving oral presentations. Participation has been seen in different forms,
including students’ questions and comments, and it can take a short while or an
extended period of time. Additionally, the ideal class discussion is one in which
almost all students participate and are involved, learning, and listening to others.

Haleem & Vaishya (2020). The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality

Management is a four-year degree that focuses on the conceptualization, planning,
development, human resource management, and management of many facets of hotel,
restaurant, and resort operations. Students will gain technical skills as well as

understanding in marketing, finance, budgeting, personnel, and other areas of

business through this course. The course also tries to in still entrepreneurship skills in
students that’s why it’s one of the common course that students take. But because of
the unpredictable conditions just like the pandemic, an underestimated effect on the
Tourism and Hotel Industry occurred, not only in the Philippines but worldwide
which may influence the perception of students in choosing their career.

Tung (2018). The preconceived notion about the hospitality and tourism
industries is that it is more of a temporary occupation rather than as table career path,
completely derailing the expectation of a young adult in having a healthy trajectory up
an establishment (Tung, Tang, & King, 2018). This stereotype causes younger
generations of employees to become impatient on climbing the ladder in their
respective fields, waiting for a possible promotion that may never even happen for a
very long time, thus they are more likely to leave the hospitality and tourism career
path altogether instead of staying in their dream career (Smith, Clement, & Pitts,
2018)

Ince and Kendir (2016). The hospitality industry is one of the most lucrative
areas for professional advancement because of its impact on the business sector. In
the hospitality and tourism sector as a service industry, staff quality is a critical aspect
of deciding services. Employees who obtain education in hospitality management and
earn professional competency play a critical role in improving service quality for the
industry's advancement and volume. It is one of the most profitable industries to
experience career growth. Students should verify that the career they choose will lead
them down the right path. Given all of these factors, every student’s orientation and
application in developing a career and boosting employment in the business after they
graduate are critical. To improve competent and trained personnel career pathways,
their positive perspective of their professions, and their firm commitment to the
business, the industry must understand and respond to these traits.

DOCUMENTARY ANALYSIS

The Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management (BSHM) is a four-year degree

program that prepares students to work in the hospitality industry. The curriculum
covers a wide range of topics, including hotel operations, food and beverage
management, marketing, and human resource management. In this documentary
analysis, we will explore the perception of BSHM students towards their course,
including their motivations for choosing the program, their expectations, and their
experiences during the course. The documentary reveals that many students choose
BSHM because of their passion for the hospitality industry. Some students have a
family background in the industry, while others have worked in hotels or restaurants
before pursuing their degree. Others choose the program because of its promising
career opportunities and the chance to travel and work in different parts of the world.
BSHM students have high expectations of their course. They expect to learn about the
various aspects of hotel management, including operations, culinary arts, and
marketing. They also expect to gain practical experience through internships and
hands-on training. Many students also expect to develop important skills such as
communication and leadership that are essential for success in the hospitality
industry.

The documentary analysis reveals that BSHM students have varied

experiences during their studies. Some students report that the course is challenging,
as it requires a lot of time and effort to complete all the coursework. Others report that
the course is exciting and enjoyable, as they get to learn about different cultures and
cuisines. Many students highlight the importance of practical experience in the
hospitality industry. They appreciate the opportunities they get to work in hotels and
restaurants, as well as the chance to organize events and participate in competitions.
However, some students feel that the practical experience is not enough and that the
curriculum could be more updated to reflect current trends and technologies in the
industry. Conclusion: In conclusion, this documentary analysis reveals that BSHM
students have a strong passion for the hospitality industry and high expectations for
their course. They appreciate the opportunities they get for practical experience, but
also recognize some areas for improvement in the curriculum. Overall, BSHM
students have a positive perception of their course and are motivated to pursue
successful careers in the hospitality industry.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

For this study, the researchers utilizes standard questionnaire to be answered

by the respondents to gather the necessary information needed in this study. This is
given to the respondents for them to answer about their level of agreeableness with
regards to their perceptions of hospitality management on their chose course. The
answered gathered will be evaluated to identify to objective of the study.

The questionnaire was structured in a way the respondents can easily answer. The set
of questionnaire was structured utility the Like rt format having a five-point response
scale. A Like rt Scale is a rating scale that requires the subject to indicate his or her
degree of agreement disagreement to a statement. In this type of questionnaire the
respondents were given five response choice such 5= Strongly Agree, 4=Agree,
3=Neutral, 2=Disagree and 1= Strongly Disagree. These options serve as the
quantification of the participants, agreement or disagreement on each question item.

STATICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

For the purpose of the analysis and interpretation, the data gathered were
coded, tallied and tabulated subjected to the following statistical treatment:

1. Frequency and Percentage

The frequency and distributions were used to categorize the respondents according to
their personal background variables such as sex, age, year level and specialization in
the first part of the questionnaire. The researchers used the formula below to
determine the proportion of students who answered in certain way in the second part
of the questionnaire:

f
p= x 100
n

Where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency

N = No. Of Respondents

2. Ranking

The researchers used the ranking technique in the study to compare the importance of
the items analyzed. Ranking as a descriptive measure ought to describe numerical
data in addition to percentage. This was used in the second part of the questionnaire .

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary or the research work undertaken, the
conclusions drawn and the recommendations are made as an outgrowth of this study.

Summary of Findings

The researchers gathered data of students having own perspective of their Course
BSHM. These topics stated by the interviewer and affects to their daily life issues,
starting from the performance, self-esteem, and participation in activities. Based on
the Theoretical framework, The effects of having negative perspective that has been
said are the main reason of having negative effect to the students. The problem and
effect have been listed down to provide recommendations in each organization that
has connection with the topic. In the field of Hospitality Management as a student
there is always an issue like financial, physical and mental capabilities. These are the
reasons of having a different performances base on the experience of the students
interviewed. Identifying the problem can help you focus in fixing specific area that
needed to be treated. We the researchers found out that Student engagement and
teacher credibility is important. Students’ academic engagement in problem-based
learning depends on their perceptions of the instructors’ caring, competence,
goodwill, communication style, and feedback. Positive student-teacher relationships
enhance students’ enthusiasm, self-regulation, and learning success.

Management based on data from a prior survey.

their rights as a worker in the industry this will be learned in the hospitality
management course.

students. Because it greatly enhances the mood of the students and their perception
towards the school and it’s education.

5. Professors should give the information and educate the students and avoid giving
the students report that will just take the time of the student and professor
relationship. Class should be more engaging in order for the students to participate.
