distribution, a significant majority of the respondents, consisting of 86 individuals, fell within the 15-17 age range, which
represents approximately 98% of the sample. Only a small percentage, approximately 2%, comprised respondents aged between
18 and 20. Analysis of the data revealed that among the different sections in the school, Section MUM had the highest number of
respondents, with a total of 16 individuals. Conversely, Section MVL had the lowest number of respondents, with only 7
individuals. The Talipan National High School reseacher In order to response of the participant the researcher encourages the up

Title Factors Influencing Grade 10 Students of Talipan National High School Choosing Strand in
Senior High

Purpose This study would like to determine Factors Influencing Grade 10 Students Choosing Strand in Senior
High School.

Brief
Introduction Republic Act No. 10533 also known as the "Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013" is an act enhancing
the Philippine's basic education system by strengthening its curriculum and increasing the number of years
for basic education, appropriating funds therefore and for other purposes.

President Benigno Aquino III implemented the K-12 education program to raise the quality of every
Filipino learner to be globally competitive. The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic
education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High

School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and
prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship.

Senior High School (SHS)** covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes Grades 11
and 12. In SHS, students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choice. The two
additional years will equip learners with skills that will better prepare them for the future, whether it be:
employment, entrepreneurship, skills development (further Tech-Voc Training), higher education (college).
Senior High School covers eight learning areas as part of its core curriculum, and adds specific tracks (similar
to college courses) based on four (4) disciplines: Academic (which includes Business, Science & Engineering,
Humanities & Social Science, and a General Academic strand). Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (with highly
specialized subject with TESDA).

SHS as part of the K to 12 Basic Curriculum, was developed in line with the curriculum of the
Commission of Higher Education (CHED) - the governing body for college and university education in the
Philippines. This ensures that by the time you graduate from Senior High School, you will have the standard
knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to go to college. This program aims to lessen unemployment
rate and encourage Filipino students to finish Senior High School because the two added years will enhance
and improve the skills of the students so that they can be job ready.

Research This study aims to know the level of satisfaction of students on new learning system. Specifically, it
Question/s sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 sex;
1.2 age;
1.3 grade level;

2. What are the perceptions of the G10 students in terms of their personal interest on various
Senior High School strands?

3. What are the aptitudes or abilities do G10 students think is applicable to the strand they have
decided?

Brief Review
of Related A career choice is important because it determines your success in the next stages of your life (PAMS,
Literature/ n.d). One of the tasks of high school students is to explore and plan for their post secondary career options.
Studies High school students are at the exploration stage of career development. Many factors affect career choices of
high school students. Identifying these factors would give parents, educators, and industry an idea as to where
students place most of their trust in career selection process (Super, 1990).

Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education; students may choose a
specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. Each student in Senior High School can
choose among three tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. The Academic
track includes three strands: Accountancy, Business Management (ABM); Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS);and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The choice of career track will
define the content of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12 (Official Gazette, 2012).

On the first semester SHS students were divided by their chosen strand. However, for this second
semester there are SHS students who opt to transfer to the other strand. It is in this context that the proponents
of the study would like to determine the factors that influence SHS student of SCC in the choice of strand.

This study is aimed at finding the factors that influence the senior high school students in their chosen
strand. It seeks answers to the following questions: What are the factors that influences senior high school
students in choosing their strand and what is the demographic profile of senior high school students who
choose their specialization in terms of: (a) Ideal Jobs, (b) Personality (c) Family and (d) Peer/Classmate. The
result of the study may provide them information on the most and least influential factors of Senior High
School students in choosing their strand. The result will help the faculty members in their programs to guide
students in choosing the strand for themselves. This study may give information on the factors that influence
Senior High School students in choosing their strand. This study may serve as reference for other researchers
who may be interested in the same problem and in others that are related to it. This study was focused on the

Design and Research Design

Methodology
For this study, the researcher used Quantitative Research Design to construct the Research instrument
based on the indicators of ech variable. The questionnaire has 10 multiple choice questions that tackle
different aspects of their reasons for choosing a specific strand/track for Senior High. The respondents
shaded the answers that were most appropriate and applicable to them. The Researcher used
Convenience Sampling Technique to Identified the 88 respondents who is willing and available to answer
the survey questionnaire of this study.

Research Locale

This research was conducted at Talipan National High School located at Sitio Fori, Barangay Talipan,
Pagbilao Quezon Province, Philippines. The respondents are the Grade 10 students, Junior High school of
TNHS.

Research Instrument

The researchers used close-ended questionnaire. The survey questionnaire includes the demographic
profiles of the respondents and contains the variables and indicators under different factors that affect a
students’ choice of strand in Senior High School. The survey questionnaire was validated by an expert to
ensure content validity

Conclusion Based from the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

1.1 Based on the findings of the survey conducted, it was observed that out of the total 88 respondents, 48 of
them were females, accounting for approximately 54.5% of the sample population. The remaining
respondents identified themselves as males.

1.2 In terms of age distribution, a significant majority of the respondents, consisting of 86 individuals, fell
within the 15-17 age range, which represents approximately 98% of the sample. Only a small percentage,
approximately 2%, comprised respondents aged between 18 and 20.

1.3 Analysis of the data revealed that among the different sections in the school, Section MUM had the
highest number of respondents, with a total of 16 individuals. Conversely, Section MVL had the lowest
number of respondents, with only 7 individuals.

2. Factors Affecting the Students' Choice

2.1 One of the key aspects explored in the research was the decision-making process behind students' choice
of their strand or specialized academic track. The findings indicate that a majority of the respondents made
their selection based on their personal skills and capabilities. This suggests that students are conscious of their
own strengths and interests when deciding on their educational path.

3. Perception of Personal Interest

3.1 Specifically focusing on students who opted for the HUMSS strand, it was observed that these individuals
carefully evaluated the pros and cons associated with this particular strand. This suggests that they take their
personal interests into account and engage in a thoughtful assessment of the potential advantages and
disadvantages before making their final decision.

4. Applicable Abilities in Chosen Strand

4.1 Further analysis of the data revealed that the respondents strongly agreed that their choice of strand was
primarily influenced by their personal interest in that particular field. This indicates that students believe it is
crucial to pursue a field of study that aligns with their passions and areas of interest, as it allows them to
effectively apply their abilities and maximize their potential for success in their chosen academic track.

In conclusion, the study examined various aspects related to the students' demographic profile, factors
influencing their choice of academic track, their perception of personal interest, and the relevance of their
abilities in the selected strand. The findings shed light on the importance of considering personal interests and
skills when making educational decisions, emphasizing the significance of aligning one's chosen academic
path with their individual strengths and aspirations.
