Machine Shop Lab Overview

Machining involves strategically removing material from a workpiece using tools to add value. Tolerances specify acceptable variation in dimensions and can be unilateral, bilateral, or compound. Geometric tolerances define acceptable variation in form, profile, orientation, and location of features. Lathes remove metal by rotating the workpiece against a fixed cutting tool, operating on the principle of chip removal. Key lathe components include the bed, headstock, tailstock, carriage, and toolpost. Common lathe operations are turning, taper turning, facing, knurling and threading. Advanced machining techniques include chemical, electrochemical, electrical discharge, laser beam, electron beam, plasma arc, water jet, and abrasive jet machining.

Classification of Tolerance

Unilateral Tolerance – when the tolerance distribution is only on one side
of the basic size. Either both positive / negative.

Bilateral Tolerance – when the tolerance distribution lies on either side of

the basic size.

LATHE

MCP101 : Machine Shop Lab

Definition :
• Lathe is a machine that removes metal from a piece of work to
required shape and size.

• Lathe operates on the principle of removing excess material in

the form of chips by utilizing a rotating workpiece and fixed
cutting tool.

• The cutting tool is fed into the workpiece, which rotates about
its axis, causing the workpiece to be formed to the desired
shape.
